Mets use 10-run fourth to crush Brewers
May 17, 2015 - 4:11 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom sailed through six innings and Wilmer Flores' grand slam keyed a 10-run fourth as the New York Mets rolled to an 14-1 rout over the Milwaukee Brewers.DeGrom (4-4) allowed a run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts and helped himself with three hits, including two in the decisive fourth.
Curtis Granderson had three hits including a home run, while Kevin Plawecki also homered.
"Tonight was a night to lift our spirits back up," said Mets manager Terry Collins.
Brewers starter Matt Garza (2-5) was charged with 10 runs on 10 hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Ryan Braun's sacrifice fly accounted for Milwaukee's only run and Carlos Gomez had two hits.
Already up 1-0 after deGrom's RBI single in the second, New York started the scoring in its big inning when Milwaukee shortstop Luis Sardinas tried cutting a runner down at home plate on a ground ball. Michael Cuddyer beat the throw, and the inning snowballed from there.
With the Brewers expecting a sacrifice bunt, DeGrom singled up the middle to re-load the bases before Flores' second career grand slam extended the Mets' edge to 6-0.
New York continued to pile on. The bases were loaded again when Cuddyer doubled home two more runs to knock Garza out of the game. Daniel Murphy followed with a double to plate two more, and Eric Campbell's single scored Murphy and completed the 10-run inning.
"He was making a few mistakes, but I didn't think he was pitching poorly," said Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell about Garza. "But then things got away from him pretty fast."
The Brewers got on the board against deGrom on Braun's sacrifice fly in the sixth, but New York's offense was not done yet.
Plawecki was the last member of the Mets' starting nine to get a hit, but he made it count with a home run to lead off the seventh. After Flores singled with one out, Granderson hit his fourth home run of the season to put the Mets up 14-1.
Erik Goeddel relieved deGrom in the seventh and struck out three in two scoreless innings, and Jake Leathersich worked a scoreless ninth.
Game Notes
Campbell was recalled after second baseman Dilson Herrera was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken finger. Herrera is the 13th player on the DL for New York this season ...
