Paxton dominates BoSox, Mariners earn series split

May 18, 2015 - 12:51 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - James Paxton threw up zeroes over a career- best eight innings to pitch the Seattle Mariners to a 5-0 triumph over the Boston Red Sox.

Paxton (2-2) scattered five hits and a pair of walks in a 105-pitch gem that extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 20 and earned the Mariners a split of this four-game set.

"Everything felt pretty good," said Paxton. "Just looking forward to the next one."

Kyle Seager supplied the offense for Seattle by going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Brad Miller added a solo shot and Mike Zunino had an RBI single in the win.

Steven Wright (1-1), making his third career major league start and first of the season, took the loss after permitting three runs -- two earned -- over five innings.

"Five innings, three runs, kind of kept the game in check," said Boston manager John Farrell. "Still, the timely hitting wasn't there."

Paxton walked five in six innings in his most recent start Tuesday against San Diego, but was in control throughout just about all of this outing. The talented lefty didn't permit a hit until Blake Swihart and Shane Victorino singled and were left stranded in the third, and was working on a 2-0 lead at the time after the Mariners strung a few hits off Wright an inning prior.

After singles by Seager and Logan Morrison put runners at the corners with none out in the second, Seattle took the lead when Red Sox rookie catcher Blake Swihart mishandled a Wright knuckler for a passed ball that enabled Seager to score. Zunino later made it 2-0 by plating Morrison with a clutch two-out single.

While Paxton continued to keep Boston off the board, Miller extended the margin by hammering Wright's hanging breaking pitch well into the right-field seats in the fifth.

The Red Sox were able to bring the tying run to the plate when Xander Bogaerts singled with two away in the seventh and Brock Holt doubled him to third. Paxton beared down and got Swihart to ground out weakly, however, to keep his scoreless streak intact.

Seager's fifth homer of the season, which came off Craig Breslow's first pitch with Nelson Cruz aboard in the eighth, increased Seattle's lead to 5-0.

Game Notes

Miller has gone 9-for-21 with four homers over a six-game hitting streak ... Paxton now owns a 1.38 ERA over his last five starts, having allowed two earned runs or fewer in each ... Wright entered Sunday's matchup 2-0 with 8 2/3 scoreless innings in two previous relief appearances against Seattle ... The Mariners finished 6-3 on a nine-game homestand, while the Red Sox completed a season-long 10-game road trip at 5-5 ... Seattle improved to 6-2 in day games.
