D-backs beat Marlins in extras; Jennings loses debut

May 19, 2015 - 12:35 PM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - David Peralta hit a go-ahead double in the 13th inning to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 victory over the Marlins on Monday.

The outcome spoiled the managerial debut of Dan Jennings.

Jennings, the Marlins' general manager, took over in the dugout less than 24 hours after Mike Redmond was fired. Jennings, despite having no managerial experience higher than high school, officially took the reins before the first pitch and watched the club again struggle at the plate, save for J.T. Realmuto's game-tying two-run homer in the seventh.

"It was surreal to be there in the moment. (The game) definitely moves quicker in the dugout than it does in the suite upstairs," Jennings said.

Yasmany Tomas went 3-for-5 with two RBI to help the Diamondbacks snap a four- game skid and send the Marlins to their eighth loss in 10 games.

"You go on a little losing streak, and I think guys start to press a little bit," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "That was the whole discussion. ... Just not to press and keep playing. Tonight was a prime example."

Even though four extra innings were played, the game lasted just 3:11 thanks to splendid efforts by both starting pitchers.

Rubby De La Rosa pitched nine innings for the Diamondbacks and Dan Haren "only" lasted eight. De La Rosa scattered six hits, the lone costly one coming off Realmuto's bat, and Haren gave up two runs on five hits. Both struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Steve Cishek (1-4) surrendered the deciding run in his second inning of relief. Chris Owings singled with one away, stole second and scored when Peralta lined a two-out double to the right-field wall.

A replay reversal benefited the Diamondbacks in the 13th. Ichiro Suzuki appeared to steal second with one out, but a review showed otherwise. Rookie Enrique Burgos struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker to seal his first career save.

Haren and De La Rosa fired zeroes until the former blinked in the fourth. Ender Inciarte and Paul Goldschmidt both singled and scored on Tomas' gapper to left, and it stayed 2-0 until De La Rosa's only mistake.

Realmuto, in his 95th at-bat, crushed a hanging slider over the wall in left for the first home run of his career. Justin Bour singled ahead of the blast.

Game Notes

Suzuki blooped a single inside the left-field line in the fifth inning for hit No. 2,873 in his MLB career, tying him with Babe Ruth for No. 42nd on baseball's all-time list ... Suzuki started in place of Marcell Ozuna, who left the ballpark before batting practice to deal with a personal issue ... Addison Reed (1-2) worked around two walks in the 12th to earn the win.
