Hundley's HR helps Rockies end Phillies' win streak
May 20, 2015 - 6:12 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Hundley's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in the Colorado Rockies' 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.Justin De Fratus (0-1) quickly retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth before Hundley connected on a 1-2 off-speed pitch and drove it just over the wall in left-center field.
John Axford pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win.
Hundley, Troy Tulowitzki and Wilin Rosario all drove in two runs for Colorado, which put an end to Philadelphia's six-game win streak.
"I don't think last night had anything to do with it," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Hundley. "But guys have been battling and it's been frustrating. So you hit a big home run like that, there's some emotion involved with it. He was fired up."
Colorado's Chad Bettis went six innings, yielding three runs on eight hits in his second start of the season.
The loss spoiled Maikel Franco's career-high three RBI. The young third baseman went 3-for-4 and was the only Phillie to have a multi-hit game.
Colorado took advantage of Franco's error in the first inning, plating three unearned runs against Aaron Harang. Tulowitzki reached safely on Franco's errant throw and Carlos Gonzalez walked to put two on for Rosario, who drove in two with a triple to right. Hundley followed with an RBI single.
Philadelphia answered over the next two innings. Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz smacked RBI doubles in the second inning to make it 3-2, and Franco tied the game at 3-3 with his RBI single in the third.
Harang kept Colorado off the scoreboard over his final five innings. He allowed just three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
"We kept coming back, especially after the first inning," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Harang really settled in."
The Rockies surged ahead in the bottom of the seventh on Tulowitzki's bloop double that fell inches between Grady Sizemore's outstretched glove and the foul line. Jake Diekman relieved Harang to begin the seventh and struck out two before a single and walk placed a pair on base. Tulowitzki's pop to right landed, and both runners scored to make it 5-3.
Philadelphia got both runs back a half inning later. Freddy Galvis and Jeff Francoeur singled and advanced a base on a wild pitch. Franco delivered a single to center, tying the game at 5-5.
The Phillies loaded the bases later that inning, but Scott Oberg (2-1) came in from the bullpen and got Ruiz to ground into an inning-ending double play.
