Warren, Teixeira lead Yankees past Royals
May 27, 2015 - 5:09 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Warren pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and Mark Teixeira knocked in four runs to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.Warren (3-3) struck out five, walked none and gave up just two hits and one run to snap a two-start losing streak.
"We swung at a lot of balls out of the zone," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "(Warren) spotted his fastball well...and located his slider pretty darn good."
Teixeira hit a two-run homer in the first inning and added a two-run double in the fifth.
The Yankees have beaten the AL Central-leading Royals twice on the heels of a six-game losing streak and will be seeking their third sweep of the season on Wednesday.
They opened the three-game set with a 14-1 win on Monday, hitting four homers and scoring 11 runs against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie, who only got three outs. They had been 1-10 in their last 11 games entering the series.
"Streaks are part of baseball and what you try to do is shorten the bad ones," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "The big thing is how they respond to it ... but there's no real secret."
Kansas City's only run on Tuesday came on Paulo Orlando's first major league homer, a solo shot off Warren in the sixth inning.
The Royals activated Jason Vargas (3-2) off the disabled list to start for Danny Duffy, who landed on the DL Monday with left biceps tendinitis.
Vargas, out since May 8 with a left flexor strain, pitched four innings. He struck out the first two batters he faced before Alex Rodriguez drew a walk and Teixeira belted his 14th home run of the season into the visitors bullpen behind the left-center field wall.
The Yankees scored three runs against Joe Blanton in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, the first two coming on Teixeira's double to the wall in right-center. Teixeira ended up at third after center fielder Lorenzo Cain bobbled the ball and scored on Chase Headley's bloop sacrifice fly to left.
Cain made a leaping catch in front of the wall on Carlos Beltran's drive to end the inning.
Warren coasted through the early innings, retiring the first 10 Royals batters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Mike Moustakas in the fourth.
That remained Kansas City's only baserunner until the 29-year-old Orlando -- a Brazlian-born outfielder appearing in his 30th major league game -- sliced a home run into the right-field seats with one out in the sixth.
Yankees left-hander Andrew Miller got the last two outs in the ninth inning with two runners on base.
Game Notes
Rodriguez had two hits and scored two runs. He is 21 hits away from 3,000 for his career ...
