Dodgers end road slump, 1st to beat Cards' Wacha

May 31, 2015 - 6:26 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dodgers ended their historic road slump against the hottest pitcher in the National League and walked off with a win against the MLB-leading Cardinals.

Howie Kendrick's RBI single in the sixth inning keyed a four-run rally against previously unbeaten Michael Wacha and helped Los Angeles beat St. Louis 5-1 on Saturday night.

After the start of the game was delayed by 2 hours and 20 minutes because of rain, the Dodgers were hitless against Wacha for the first five innings. Worse, they set a franchise record by going 42 innings without scoring a run on the road.

But Justin Turner ended the no-hit bid with a double and came home later on Kendrick's hit for the Dodgers' first run away from home since the eighth inning of a 9-5 win over Colorado on May 10.

Yasmani Grandal added a three-run homer off Wacha to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead.

"I just got behind Grandal and he put a good swing on a heater, hit it out of here," Wacha said.

The Cardinals had won each of Wacha's previous 11 starts, including the first nine this season. They had a five-game winning streak snapped overall.

Kendrick finished with two hits and two runs scored.

Carlos Frias (4-2) gave up one unearned run in seven innings to pick up the win, his first in four starts. He yielded just five hits and two walks six days after his worst outing of the season, when he was battered for 10 runs and 12 hits in four-plus innings against San Diego last Sunday.

"You put that one away and get ready for the next start," Frias said of his last start.

Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward had two hits apiece but the Cardinals ended with just six as a team.

Wacha (7-1) issued three walks in the first five innings but didn't give up a hit until Turner drove his 90th pitch off the right-field wall with one out in the sixth.

The young right-hander's ERA jumped from 1.87 to 2.27 after giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings, only the second time this season he's allowed more than two.

He was seeking to become the first eight-game winner in the NL and the first Cardinals pitcher to start a season 8-0 since Matt Morris in 2005. It was his first regular-season loss since Sept. 9 in Cincinnati.

The Dodgers had runner at the corners in the seventh when left fielder Randal Grichuk robbed Adrian Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a leaping catch at the wall, ending the inning.

But Los Angeles added a run in the eighth on Alberto Callaspo's RBI single to make it 5-1.

Earlier, Kolten Wong scored on a groundout to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the first inning after reaching base on a leadoff grounder that Kendrick bobbled at second base for an error.

Jon Jay singled in the second inning for the Cardinals and tried to move up two bases after left fielder Scott Van Slyke bobbled the ball and it went into the corner, but Van Slyke recovered to throw him out at third.

The Dodgers lost the opener of the three-game series 3-0 on Friday -- the fourth consecutive road game they were shut out, also a franchise record. Their 42-inning scoreless streak on the road was the longest since the Dodgers joined the NL in 1890, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The previous record was a 41-inning drought in 1908 in Pittsburgh and Chicago, which came in the midst of a 22-game road trip through six National League cities ... Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday drew a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, extending his franchise record to 44 consecutive games reaching base safely to start the season. Holliday, who missed Friday's game because of flu-like symptoms, was removed from the game prior to the fifth ... Dodgers shortstop Jimmy Rollins was dropped to eighth in the batting order but continued to struggle, going 0- for-4.
