Beltran's HR, 3 RBI lead Yankees over A's
May 31, 2015 - 5:41 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Beltran hit a go-ahead homer and knocked in three runs to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday night.Beltran's two-run blast in the sixth inning was one of 22 combined hits between the teams and the only one that wasn't a single.
He added an RBI single for the Yankees, who had lost the first two games of the four-game series.
Beltran has 28 hits this month -- including all four of his home runs -- after batting .162 in April.
"It takes guys a while to get going and feel good about their swings and be mechanically sound," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, "and that's where he is."
Oakland hit 12 singles and will get another chance to win a home series for the first time this season on Sunday.
"We were getting good at-bats and getting our share of hits, just not to the point where we were knocking in runs early," said A's manager Bob Melvin.
Chasen Shreve (2-1) picked up the win for New York after striking out all four batters he faced in relief of starter Nathan Eovaldi, who yielded three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller combined to throw three shutout innings to seal the win, with Miller picking up his 15th save.
Coming off his first career shutout, Oakland starter Jesse Hahn (2-5) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and a walk in six innings.
After the teams hit 17 consecutive singles to start the game, Beltran stroked his fourth homer of the season over the center field with one out in the sixth to make it 4-3.
His RBI hit in the eighth came against reliever Arnold Leon after Mark Teixeira singled, stole a base for the first time since last July 8 and moved to third on Brian McCann's groundout.
Earlier, Chase Headley, Alex Rodriguez and McCann singled in the first inning, with Headley scoring on McCann's hit to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The A's also had three singles in the first, but Marcus Semien was thrown out at home plate by left fielder Ramon Flores to end the inning.
They hit four more singles in the third, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Billy Butler had a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Josh Reddick added an RBI hit to knock in the runs.
Semien hit an RBI single for Oakland in the fourth inning and Headley had one in the fifth to draw the Yankees within 3-2.
Game Notes
The A's placed left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle back on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain after one appearance. They recalled righty Angel Castro from Triple-A Nashville to take his place on the roster.
