Kiermaier's HR in 10th lifts Rays over Angels
Jun 4, 2015 - 5:58 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Kiermaier's solo blast in the 10th inning provided the difference as the Rays eked out a 6-5 win over the Angels in the rubber match of a three-game series.Steven Souza Jr. hit a three-run homer and fellow rookie Joey Butler added a two-run shot -- both in the sixth inning -- to give the Rays a 5-4 lead that Brad Boxberger (3-3) blew in the ninth.
Erick Aybar brought in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, but after Albert Pujols grounded out to leave the potential winning run on second, Kiermaier crushed a Huston Street (2-2) offering into the right-field seats leading off the 10th.
"I wanted to step up big for our team," Kiermaier said. "I looked for my pitch (fastball) and got it.'
Steve Geltz recorded the final two outs in the home half and left a runner on second to post his second save.
The Angels jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Nathan Karns as Mike Trout hit a solo homer in the first inning, Pujols singled in a run in the third and Johnny Giavotella blasted a two-run shot in the fourth.
Angels starter Hector Santiago set down 10 straight before the fateful sixth. After Brandon Guyer was hit by a pitch, Butler halved the Rays' deficit with a blast to straightaway center.
Evan Longoria singled and Logan Forsythe walked prior to Souza abruptly ending Santiago's outing with a no-doubter into the left-field seats. Santiago was charged with five runs on five hits and two walks.
"Hector pitched a great game until the sixth, and then the wheels fell off," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He made some mistakes and they didn't miss."
Brandon Gomes, Jake McGee and Kevin Jepsen kept the Angels quiet until the ninth.
