Shields still unbeaten, Padres take down Mets

Jun 4, 2015 - 6:20 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Middlebrooks drove in three runs to back seven solid innings from James Shields, as San Diego took care of the New York Mets by a 7-3 count on Wednesday.

Will Venable added two hits and two RBI for the Padres, while Yonder Alonso knocked in the other run and Justin Upton crossed home twice.

Shields (7-0) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.

"I was getting more ground balls tonight," Shields said. "I was making my pitches."

Anthony Recker, Ruben Tejada and Kevin Plawecki drove in a run each for the Mets, who committed three errors en route to their second straight loss.

Dillon Gee (0-3) returned from a groin injury which cost him a month, but was tagged for seven runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over four-plus frames.

"I just had a bad night. They squared up a lot of balls," Gee admitted. "Everything that was in the middle of the plate got hit."

New York came to life with runs in the sixth and seventh on a Tejada double and a Recker single, respectively, but the Mets were still behind 7-2.

In the ninth, Craig Kimbrel retired the first two batters he faced, but ran into trouble. Recker reached on a Middlebrooks error, went to second on indifference and scored on Plawecki's pinch double.

Curtis Granderson walked and Tejada added a single to load the bases, but Lucas Duda grounded to second.

The Padres struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. They loaded the bases on a Tejada error, walk to Upton and single from Matt Kemp ahead of Alonso's plunking to force in a run and a Middlebrooks sacrifice fly.

It was 4-0 for the hosts in the fourth as Venable chased home two with his two-out single. Cory Spangenberg and Alexi Amarista both reached with singles before being sacrificed into scoring position by Shields.

San Diego assumed a seven-run edge in the fifth. Runners were on the corners with none out when Alonso's dribbler was thrown away by Gee, allowing Upton to score. Middlebrooks followed with a single that brought in two more.

Game Notes

San Diego won its first home series since sweeping Colorado from May 1-3 ... Gee's streak of 51 straight outings lasting five-plus innings was snapped, but the next longest active MLB streak belongs to Shields, who upped his run to 50.
