Indians blank M's to salvage series finale
Jun 12, 2015 - 2:07 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Shaun Marcum tossed seven strong innings to lead the Cleveland Indians over the Seattle Mariners, 6-0, in the finale of a three-game set at Progressive Field on Thursday afternoon.Marcum (3-1) allowed just two hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter, as Cleveland salvaged the finale of this series to end a three-game losing streak.
"The guys scored a lot of runs behind me and played good defense," Marcum said. "It was a good day for everybody."
Giovanny Urshela went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored for Cleveland, which ended a six-game homestand with just two wins. Brandon Moss also had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Indians.
Robinson Cano and Mark Trumbo had the only hits for Seattle, which lost for just the second time in five games.
The Indians got to Seattle starter J.A. Happ early and forced the left-hander from the contest after just 2 1/3 innings.
"I felt like I could have kept battling," Happ said. "That part is certainly frustrating."
Cleveland got its first run in the second inning when Zach Walters singled home Moss. Then, a four-run third gave the Indians a 5-0 lead. Moss singled home the first run and forced Happ from the contest after he threw 77 pitches.
Reliever Tom Wilhelmsen didn't fare any better. Urshela greeted the hurler with his first career base hit, scoring a run. Then, after a passed ball put runners on second and third, Roberto Perez's base hit scored both runners for a comfortable cushion.
Urshela connected on his first career homer in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.
Marcum, meanwhile was cruising. He didn't allow his first hit until there was one out in the fifth inning. Later, after Cano doubled to start the seventh, Marcum retired the next three hitters to end his afternoon.
Zach McAllister tossed a perfect eighth and Cody Allen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the shutout.
Happ (3-2) was hit with the loss after being charged with four runs on six hits, striking out three and walking two.
Seattle's Logan Morrison went 0-for-3 to see his 16-game hitting streak come to an end.
