Phelps, Marlins blank Rockies
Jun 12, 2015 - 4:19 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - David Phelps fired eight scoreless innings and Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer to lift the Miami Marlins to a 6-0 win over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a four-game set Thursday night.Phelps (3-3) allowed just four hits and a walk, while striking out six to earn his first win since May 9.
"That's an outstanding outing by him to set the tone the way he did," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said of Phelps.
Adeiny Hechavarria finished with three hits, Christian Yelich had two hits and two runs scored and Jeff Baker also homered for the Marlins, who ended a three-game skid.
DJ LeMahieu had two of the Rockies' four hits, while starter Chris Rusin (2-1) gave up six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 frames.
The Marlins opened the scoring in the first inning. Martin Prado doubled and Yelich walked with one out before Stanton belted a three-run shot just over the left-field wall for an early lead.
In the second, Yelich added an RBI triple with two outs and Stanton's soft infield single on the third base line plated Yelich for a 5-0 score.
Baker added to the Miami lead with a solo shot to left in the fifth.
The Rockies had runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth after Phelps hit Charlie Blackmon with a pitch and LeMahieu singled, but Troy Tulowitzki flied out to left to leave them stranded.
Carter Capps gave up a two-out hit to Corey Dickerson in the ninth, but struck out Ben Paulsen to end the game.
"Corey swung the bat well," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Dickerson, who had been sidelined since May 18 with left foot plantar fasciitis.

Prior to the game, the Rockies activated reliever LaTroy Hawkins and Dickerson from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder/first baseman Kyle Parker and pitcher Christian Bergman to Triple-A Albuquerque. Dickerson went 2-for-4, while Hawkins tossed a scoreless eighth ... Miami's Marcell Ozuna extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Tulowitzki ran his to 10.
