Gennett leads Brewers over Nats
Jun 12, 2015 - 4:51 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Scooter Gennett singled in the winning run in the eighth inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers in a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals in the opener of a four-game set.Gerardo Parra hit a solo home run and scored twice while Ryan Braun, Adam Lind, Aramis Ramirez and Shane Peterson each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have won three of their last four.
"Down four, that's a pretty good deficit," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of the comeback. "We kept chipping away and we got to them."
Matt Garza allowed five runs -- two earned -- on eight hits while striking out seven in six innings on the mound.
Will Smith (2-0), who was reinstated from the suspension list prior to the game, tossed a scoreless eighth for the win. He had been suspended for the previous six games after getting thrown out of a game against Atlanta on May 21 for having a mixture of sunscreen and rosin on his arm.
Denard Span went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Clint Robinson hit a solo home run for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last five. Tanner Roark allowed five runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings in the start.
"That's on my shoulders for not keeping (the lead) and letting them back in the game," Roark said.
With the score tied in the eighth, Ramirez was able to reach base after striking out as Aaron Barrett's (3-2) pitch went wild. A fielder's choice from Peterson saw Ramirez forced out, but Anthony Rendon's throw went wild and Peterson took second. Jean Segura then grounded out to move Peterson to third, and Gennett ripped a single down the third base line for a 6-5 lead.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched around a two-out single in the ninth to pick up his 13th save of the season.
A bad throw by Segura on a Bryce Harper grounder in the first allowed Span to score and give the Nationals a 1-0 lead, but Braun's RBI triple in the home half tied the game.
Robinson's first career home run in the second allowed Washington to take a 2-1 lead, and the team built on that advantage in the fourth.
With one out, Robinson and Michael Taylor singled before Roark struck out on a foul bunt. Span then singled home Robinson, and an error from Ramirez on a Rendon grounder allowed Taylor and Span to score for a 5-1 advantage.
Braun singled to start the home fourth and Lind followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position. Consecutive run-scoring groundouts from Ramirez and Peterson made it a 5-3 game.
The Brewers made it a one-run game in the fifth on Lind's RBI single and tied the game in the seventh thanks to Parra's solo homer to center, his fourth of the season.
Game Notes
Milwaukee recalled Gennett from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game ... The Nationals made a flurry of moves on Thursday, the biggest of which was placing first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list. Also, the team acquired pitcher David Carpenter from the New York Yankees in exchange for infielder Tony Renda.
