Orioles batter Yankees for fifth straight win

Jun 13, 2015 - 3:55 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Davis' homer and four RBI helped keep the Baltimore Orioles rolling with an 11-3 rout of the New York Yankees in the opener of a three-game series between the division rivals.

The Orioles cruised to a season-high fifth consecutive win behind a 16-hit attack that featured plenty of contributors. Davis went 3-for-5, Caleb Joseph had a solo homer among his three hits, Jimmy Paredes finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Manny Machado scored three times while collecting a pair of hits.

Much of Baltimore's damage came against an ineffective Michael Pineda (7-3), tagged for six runs -- five earned -- and nine hits over a season-low 4 1/3 innings.

"I tried to throw my best pitch in the game today, and the slider was not working very good," Pineda said.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-3) earned his first victory since May 11 by striking out six while allowing three runs in five-plus innings.

Mason Williams provided one of the few bright spots in the AL East-leading Yankees' second straight loss on the heels of a seven-game win streak, cracking a two-run homer for his first major league hit. Alex Rodriguez ended 2-for-4 and drove in his 1,999th career run with a single.

Making his first start in 11 days after having his last turn skipped, Pineda appeared rusty against a Baltimore team he racked up a career-high 16 strikeouts against back on May 10. He was touched for a run in the opening inning and hit hard in the third, when the Orioles scored four times to break a 1-1 tie.

After Baltimore put its first two on in the third when Chase Headley misplayed Machado's grounder to third and Paredes singled, Adam Jones ripped a base hit to left center to snap the deadlock. Davis then clobbered Pineda's hanging slider over the scoreboard in right to give Jimenez a four-run cushion.

"He didn't quite have the command he had last time (the Orioles faced him)," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said of Pineda. "Guys put some good swings on mistakes he did make."

Williams' blast with a runner aboard in the fourth brought the Yankees within 5-3, but Joseph doubled in Baltimore's half of the inning and came around on a Paredes single to increase the lead.

Jimenez was lifted after yielding a leadoff single to Carlos Beltran in the sixth, and the Yankees later loaded the bases with two out before coming up empty when reliever T.J. McFarland retired Brendan Ryan on a fly ball.

Joseph started the bottom of the sixth with a long drive into the home bullpen off Jacob Lindgren, and the Orioles scored three more times in the frame to put the game out of reach. Machado singled and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch from Esmil Rogers, J.J. Hardy knocked in Paredes with a two-out double and Travis Snider tacked on an RBI single to stretch the margin to 10-3.

Consecutive singles from Ryan Flaherty and Joseph led to Baltimore's final run when the former scored on Paredes' force out in the seventh.

Pineda's lack of command was evident right from the outset, as the usually sharp righty walked Machado on five pitches to begin his stint. Paredes followed with a single and Davis cracked a base hit off the right-field wall two batters later to send the Orioles in front.

Jimenez was able to pitch out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the first and held New York scoreless until Rodriguez singled in Brett Gardner in the third.

"That was the key to the game," said Showalter of Jimenez's early escape job. "It's a real momentum-turner. We come in and score. That's one you kind of look back on."

Game Notes

The Orioles have reached the .500 mark for the first time since they were 12-12 on May 12 ... Headley injured his groin on his second-inning error and was removed from the game in the bottom of the fifth ... Williams had not homered in 235 plate appearances in the minors this season ... Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira had a career-long 109-game errorless streak end when he made an errant throw to second in the sixth inning ... The victory was Showalter's 407th with the team, tying Hank Bauer for third place on the franchise's all-time list.
