Mets hold off Braves
Jun 13, 2015 - 5:01 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer and Wilmer Flores added a solo shot as the New York Mets opened a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves with a 5-3 win on Friday night.Bartolo Colon (9-4) earned the win for going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. Colon, who tied Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole and Seattle's Felix Hernandez for the Major League lead in wins, improved to 7-2 lifetime against the Braves, including three winning decisions this year in which he has not allowed more than three runs in each outing.
"Today he didn't have his good stuff, he didn't have the good movement that he usually has," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Colon. "He battles so well that you kind of liked where you were after six innings."
Alex Wood (4-4) suffered his first road loss of the season, yielding five runs -- four earned -- over 6 1/3 innings.
Wood and Jace Peterson each had an RBI for the Braves, who have dropped two straight and four of their last six.
Carlos Torres faced the minimum in the eighth and Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his 18th save of the season despite loading the bases. Nick Markakis grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
"As long as we continue to play well in our division, you gotta like the way we're going," Collins added.
Flores gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with his 10th homer of the season, a second- inning blast off Wood.
Colon brought a no-hitter into the fourth before Freddie Freeman served a single into left for the Braves' first hit with one out in the frame.
Flores walked with one out in the fourth and came home on Mayberry's homer to left center as New York built a 3-0 edge.
"I wouldn't call it a growing pain, I would just call it a mental mistake to Mayberry," Wood said.
Atlanta responded in the fifth with three straight singles to begin the inning. Wood helped his own cause by legging out a fielder's choice to push a run across, then Peterson stroked a double off the fence in right that scored Jonny Gomes and brought the Braves within a run. Cameron Maybin struck out preceding an intentional walk to Freeman that reloaded the bases, but Markakis ended the inning with a groundout to Colon.
In the sixth, New York earned another run on Eric Campbell's RBI groundout after Wood's errant pickoff attempt allowed Mayberry and Dilson Herrera to each move into scoring position.
Markakis grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded in the seventh to force another run home, and Carlos Torres came on for Alex Torres to get out of the inning with a groundout from Juan Uribe.
Michael Cuddyer got the run back in the home seventh with an RBI double that drove in Darrell Ceciliani for a 5-3 lead.
