Tigers take out Kluber, Indians
Jun 15, 2015 - 12:03 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - J.D. Martinez clubbed a three-run homer while Alfredo Simon outpitched Corey Kluber as Detroit silenced Cleveland, 8- 1, in the rubber match of a three-game series.Simon (7-3) tossed five innings of three-hit, scoreless ball during which he fanned five and walked only one. Kluber (3-8), meanwhile was also out after five after giving up two runs on four hits.
Bryan Holaday contributed two RBI for the Tigers, who also received an RBI from Ian Kinsler while Miguel Cabrera finished 3-for-4 with a solo blast and three runs scored.
"Maybe we're seeing a little bit of leveling off. Guys are starting to hit and the ones who were hitting are starting to get hot," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.
Brandon Moss' late homer was the lone meaningful offense for the Indians, while Jason Kipnis added a pair of hits in defeat.
Rains delayed the game for almost two hours, forcing both starters from the contest once it resumed prior to the top of the sixth. In the home half, Kinsler walked and Cabrera singled ahead of a Martinez blast to right to put the hosts up by 5-0.
Detroit tacked on three more in its last at-bat, as a Tyler Collins fielder's choice grounder scored Cabrera ahead of Holaday's two-run double.
Moss finally put the Indians on the board with one down in the ninth against Joakim Soria, when his shot to left caromed off the glove of Yoenis Cespedes as he leapt to try and snag the ball at the wall.
Francisco Lindor posted his first MLB hit and Zach Walters added a single, bringing on Tom Gorzelanny, who induced a game-ending fly out from Mike Aviles.
Anthony Gose walked, stole second and scored on a Kinsler base hit in the bottom of the first and Simon had all the offense he needed.
Kipnis walked but was stranded at third in the fourth, then Cabrera's shot to deep center with one away in the home half put the Tigers up 2-0.
"You're asking the wrong guy," Kluber said when queried on how to pitch to Cabrera. The former Triple Crown winner has hit .571 (20-for-35) with five homers off the reigning Al Cy Young winner.
Game Notes
Cabrera's homer traveled an estimated 450 feet, his second-longest of the season to a shot which landed two feet further on Friday ... The Indians selected the contract of Lindor from Triple-A Columbus prior to Sunday's series finale, and filled a roster spot made available when designated hitter Nick Swisher went back on the 15-day disabled list due to continued knee troubles.
