Pirates blank White Sox again

Jun 17, 2015 - 4:27 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Morton tossed seven shutout innings and Pittsburgh continued to shut down its opponents with a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Pirates posted back-to-back shutouts to open this two-game home-and-home set and have produced three straight whitewashes and five in their last six games.

Morton (5-0) allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out three, and Francisco Cervelli and Sean Rodriguez added solo home runs for the Pirates, who have won six straight.

"I guess my failures in spring training forced me to change some things," said Morton. "Going on the DL gave me the opportunity to do that and work on some things."

Jose Quintana (3-7) allowed all three runs on nine hits over six innings for the White Sox, who have lost five straight and will look to turn things around when they host the Pirates for the next two games.

"Sometimes I don't feel like I have good control over my fastball," said Quintana. "Bad things happen when I don't but hopefully next time I'm on the mound I can get it under control."

The Pirates struck in the third as Starling Marte singled to lead off, stole second and came home on Andrew McCutchen's RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Rodriguez homered with one out in the fourth, and Cervelli led off the sixth with a shot over the wall in left-center for a 3-0 advantage.

After working out of a first and second jam in the opening inning, Morton allowed just one runner to reach second over the rest of his start.

Tony Watson tossed a scoreless eighth, and Mark Melancon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 21st save of the season.

Game Notes

Marte had produced at least three hits in his previous four games, but failed to continue that run as he was 2-for-5 ... Chicago still leads the all-time series, 17-11 ... The Pirates left 11 men on base ... Cervelli has caught 51 straight scoreless innings.
