Indians shut out Cubs

Jun 17, 2015 - 5:04 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Trevor Bauer twirled a gem and Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer to lead the Cleveland Indians in a 6-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Bauer (6-3) struck out seven in seven scoreless innings for Cleveland, which improved to 18-15 away from home this season. Bauer gave up four hits and three walks.

"Any time you go out and put up zeroes things are going pretty well," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Bauer. "He got stronger as he went."

Rookie shortstop Francisco Lindor, who made his major league debut in a reserve role on Sunday, drove in his first run in his first career start. Santana finished with four RBI, Michael Brantley knocked in Cleveland's other run and Jason Kipnis scored three times.

Jake Arrieta (6-5) matched a career high with six walks in a losing effort. He was charged with four runs in five innings of work.

"He wasn't his usual efficient self," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Arrieta. "He had 82 (pitches) after four (innings)."

Arrieta struck out Bauer and Lindor in the third, but Kipnis and Brantley drew walks to put two on for Santana. He crushed a high fastball into the seats in right on the second pitch he saw.

Bauer singled to start the fifth and Kipnis replaced him on first base on a fielder's choice. Kipnis stole second for the second time of the night and scored on Lindor's single into right-center to make it 4-0.

Brantley plated Kipnis with a double in the seventh, and Santana's two-bagger scored Lindor in the ninth to produce the final tally.

Kyle Schwarber, one of Chicago's many prized young prospects, made his major league debut in the ninth inning and struck out on three pitches. The catcher was called up from Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.
