Brewers rally past Mets

Jun 24, 2015 - 5:00 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Gomez returned from a four-game absence and scored the winning run in the Milwaukee Brewers' 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Tuesday.

Gomez drew a one-out walk against Mets reliever Hansel Robles (1-2) in the seventh inning and showed the wheels one batter later. Sean Gilmartin replaced Robles and Adam Lind greeted him by slapping a double the opposite way down the left field line. The ball squirted past Michael Cuddyer in foul territory, allowing Gomez to score the go-ahead run.

"Nothing is going our way right now," Cuddyer said. "You keep going out there and trying to do the best you can to succeed and come through in the situations and fight."

Mike Fiers tossed six innings of two-run ball for the Brewers, who have won two of four following a six-game losing skid. Fiers allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Will Smith (3-0) struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win, and Francisco Rodriguez fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save.

The Mets got a quality start out of Jonathon Niese but were outhit 9-4 and dropped a season-high sixth straight game.

"We did a good job of getting men on base and putting pressure on Niese," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.

Milwaukee plated a run off Niese in the bottom of the first inning after he quickly retired the first two batters he faced. Ryan Braun and Gomez singled to set up Lind's RBI single to center. Niese then walked Aramis Ramirez to load the bases but got out of the jam.

Curtis Granderson tied it in the third with his 10th home run of the season, and Kevin Plawecki gave the Mets a 2-1 lead an inning later, plating Wilmer Flores with a sacrifice fly.

New York's lead held until the home sixth. Gerardo Parra singled, Hernan Perez walked and Gomez reached on a bunt single down the third base line. Jean Segura drove a sacrifice fly to center to tie it at 2-2, but Perez was thrown out at third for the double-play and Jonathan Lucroy grounded out to end the frame.

Game Notes

Gomez had missed nine of the previous 12 games with a hip injury ... The Mets outrighted pitcher Dillon Gee to Triple-A Las Vegas, placed catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury and recalled catcher Johnny Monell Jr. from Las Vegas on Tuesday ... Niese allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings ... Prior to the game, Milwaukee had a moment of silence for former Mets and Brewers outfielder Darryl Hamilton, who was found dead in his home in Houston on Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide.
