Giants beat Padres 13-8 to win series
Jun 26, 2015 - 3:22 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Heston pitched seven strong innings and Buster Posey and Gregor Blanco knocked in three runs apiece as the San Francisco Giants held on for a 13-8 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday afternoon.Heston (8-5) gave up two runs, both in his last inning, and allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out six. He added an RBI single that helped San Francisco build a 7-0 lead that nearly slipped away as the Padres scored two runs in the seventh and six in the eighth.
"Those things are going to happen," said Heston. "We've all been out there and given a few up. But the bats have been swinging so good lately and luckily we were able to come back and put a four-spot on them."
The Giants, who won two of three in the series, had four triples in the game, including two by Brandon Belt. They finished with 19 hits overall, including three apiece from Posey, Belt and Joe Panik.
Padres starter James Shields (7-2) gave up seven runs, nine hits and two walks in just four-plus innings. Shields, who is winless in his last four starts after going 7-0 in his first 12, had seven strikeouts.
Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who finished a 3-5 road trip.
"There are no moral victories," Padres manager Pat Murphy said. "I still see goodness. I see good players, guys getting better, even the guys who are slumping, I see flashes."
Kemp's blast off Jeremy Affeldt came during a six-run eighth inning in which the Padres sent 11 batters to the plate, including four pinch-hitters, and the Giants used three pitchers.
The other four runs scored on Clint Barmes' double and RBI singles by Alexi Amarista, Brett Wallace and Yangervis Solarte to get San Diego within 9-8.
But the Giants scored four in the bottom of the inning, the big blow coming on Posey's two-run double. Brandon Crawford also doubled to drive in a run and Matt Duffy had an RBI single.
The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Panik's RBI single and Belt's two-out triple to the deep part of right-center.
Belt tripled to the same place in the fourth inning to spark a three-run rally. Blanco, Heston and Angel Pagan all hit RBI singles in the flurry and the Giants tacked on two runs in the fifth to make a 7-0 lead.
Duffy hit their third triple leading off the fifth and scored when Posey singled on Shields' last pitch. Blanco added an RBI single off Frank Garces later in the inning.
Heston retired 12 batters in a row between Justin Upton's leadoff single in the second inning and brother Melvin Upton Jr.'s leadoff single in the sixth.
The Padres scored two runs off him in the seventh on Will Middlebrooks' RBI triple -- which center fielder Pagan dropped while slamming into the wall -- and Amarista's RBI single.
The Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, getting one on Crawford's triple off the right-field wall.
