Rockies score 5 runs in 8th, top D-backs in rubber match
Jun 26, 2015 - 12:45 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado each homered and the Colorado Rockies used a five-run eighth inning to top the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 in Thursday's rubber match.Wilin Rosario went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Ben Paulsen also drove in a run for the Rockies, who have won four of their last five games.
Justin Miller (1-0) earned the win after tossing a flawless eighth inning and John Axford nailed down his 13th save of the season.
A.J. Pollock had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Paul Goldschmidt, Danny Dorn and Welington Castillo also brought in a run for the Diamondbacks.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Arizona's Rubby De La Rosa gave up one run and five hits over seven frames, while Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa allowed a run, four hits an three walks in five-plus innings before leaving the game with a finger injury.
Colorado reclaimed the lead with an emphatic offensive showing in the eighth.
Tulowitzki knotted the game with a leadoff blast off Daniel Hudson (2-3) to right.
"It's just very typical of playing in this ballpark," said Arizona manager Chip Hale. "The game's never over. One-run leads are tough to hold. The one thing that was disappointing today was just not being able to stop the damage once it started."
Charlie Blackmon followed Tulowitzki's homer with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Rafael Ynoa's sacrifice bunt.
After Arenado was intentionally walked, Blackmon scored on Paulsen's groundout and Arenado scored after Rosario hit a bloop single into center. Michael McKenry walked and Oliver Perez issued a free pass to Hundley to load the bases. Two more runs came home for Colorado after third baseman Aaron Hill misplayed Brandon Barnes' grounder, making it a 6-2 game.
"We added some runs on late and barely held on," Tulowitzki said.
The Rockies scored twice in the ninth on Dorn's groundout and Goldschmidt's sacrifice fly, but Axford struck out Yasmany Tomas for his 13th save of the season.
Castillo put Arizona on the board with an RBI single in the sixth, but Arenado got the run back for the Rockies with a solo shot to left-center field in the bottom half.
The Diamondbacks went ahead in the seventh. After Christian Bergman struck out the first two batters, Nick Ahmed and Pollock hit consecutive doubled to make it a 2-1 game.
Paulsen made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Chris Owings of a home run and record the final out of the eighth.
