Arenado hits 2 HRs, Rockies down Giants

Jun 27, 2015 - 6:06 AM San Francisco, CA ( - Nolan Arenado smacked a pair of homers and the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-6 in the opener of a three-game set.

Arenado cracked a three-run and solo shot for the Rockies, who have won five of their last six games. Carlos Gonzalez went 5-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Chad Bettis (4-2) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings to earn the win.

Andrew Susac hit a solo blast for San Francisco, which had won five of its last seven contests coming in. Tim Hudson (5-7) surrendered five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6 2/3 frames to garner the loss.

The game was tied 3-3 before the Rockies surged ahead with a three-run seventh.

Charlie Blackmon hit a one-out single and after D.J. LeMahieu lined out, Troy Tulowitzki walked to put runners on first and second. Javier Lopez replaced Hudson on the mound and served up the go-ahead double to Gonzalez, who plated Blackmon. Arenado was intentionally walked and Ben Paulsen's single through the hole on the left side plated Tulowitzki and Gonzalez for a 6-3 Colorado margin.

Gonzalez scored on a passed ball in the ninth and Arenado's solo shot later in the frame made it 8-3.

Brandon Crawford crossed the plate on a passed ball in the home ninth and RBI singles by Gregor Blanco and Joe Panik accounted for the final margin.

"We fought hard ... That's all you can ask," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Earlier, Susac's one-out solo shot in the fifth began the scoring but Arenado's three-run blast more than halfway up the seats in left in the sixth put the Rockies in front.

RBI singles by Brandon Belt and Crawford in the home sixth tied the game at 3-3.

Arenado has 22 homers and 64 RBI on the season ... Jake Peavy allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over six frames in his final rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Friday night ... Colorado was 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
