Fielder, Beltre homer in Rangers win over Padres

Jul 11, 2015 - 4:26 AM ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Prince Fielder drove in one run with a long home run, and another with a short popup on Friday night.

Adrian Beltre followed Fielder's leadoff homer in the fourth inning with one his own, and the Texas Rangers beat the San Diego Padres 4-3, ending an eight-game home losing streak, one shy of the franchise record.

San Diego extended its longest losing streak this season to six games.

Fielder's home run against Ian Kennedy (4-9) went an estimated 415 feet into the stands in right field. That was one run and another came in the first inning when Delino DeShields' scored on Fielder's 150-foot sacrifice fly to third baseman Will Middlebrooks in short left-center field.

''It definitely helped,'' Fielder said. ''Without it, we'd be in a tie game right now.''

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said, ''(DeShields) was able to score on a ball that didn't get very far out of the infield. That's what speed can do for you.''

''He was halfway and then went back and tagged because they thought I was going to catch it this way,'' Middlebrooks said. ''And when I looked up, he was gone.''

Rangers starter Wandy Rodriguez (6-4) ended his seven-game losing streak in Arlington, where he hadn't won in 9 years. In 5 1-3 innings, he allowed three hits and one run - Melvin Upton Jr.'s leadoff homer in the sixth.

Upton had his first three-hit game this season. Matt Kemp added a single and a double.

The Rangers' Roughned Odor tripled and singled.

Rodriguez said he felt more comfortable on the mound, six days after allowing five runs in five innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

''I felt a little weird my last time on the mound,'' he said, ''so I talked to the guys that fix the field. They worked on it a little bit and fixed it.''

Between starts, Rodriguez threw off the game mound instead of in the bullpen. He said he felt good even then.

Shawn Tolleson pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 13th save. It came on the day when former closer Neftali Feliz declined an assignment to the minor leagues and became a free agent.

San Diego pulled to 4-3 against Tanner Scheppers, Texas' fifth pitcher, in the eighth inning.

Yonder Alonso walked, Kemp doubled and Justin Upton hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track. Kemp then stole third base and continued home on Odor's throwing error.

An infield hit and a walk put two Padres on base with two outs in the ninth, but Tolleson remained perfect in save situations by striking out Kemp.

BACK-TO BACK JACKS

Beltre has hit a home run after one by Fielder four times. The third baseman hadn't homered in 21 games, since May 25.

MAGIC WANDY

Rodriguez's last win in Arlington was July 2, 2006, for the Astros. He had an 0-4 record and 7.42 ERA in four starts this season, his first with the Rangers.

Rangers: LHP Derek Holland (strained shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday. ... LHP Martin Perez, out since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2014, is scheduled for another injury-rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Padres: LF Justin Upton (sore left oblique) returned after being scratched from the previous game's lineup on Wednesday at Pittsburgh. ... RHP Brandon Morrow (inflamed right shoulder) is with the Padres, and is scheduled for a simulated game Saturday. ... C Tim Federowicz (right knee surgery) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class-A Lake Elsinore on Saturday.

Rangers: RHP Colby Lewis (8-4, 4.83) had won four straight decisions before giving up five runs in five innings against the Angels on Saturday. Lewis could cross San Diego off the list of teams he hasn't faced, leaving just the Dodgers and Pirates.

Padres: RHP James Shields (7-3, 3.88) is 0-3 in his last six starts. In 13 career starts against Texas he is 7-3, 2.44.
