Stanton leads Marlins past Dodgers in Mattingly's return

Apr 26, 2016 - 6:09 AM LOS ANGELES (AP) Giancarlo Stanton did everything within his considerable power to make Don Mattingly's return to Los Angeles a winning one.

Stanton homered, doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Marlins past the Dodgers 3-2 on Monday night in Miami manager Mattingly's return to Los Angeles.

Mattingly, who managed the Dodgers from 2011-15, received a mix of boos and cheers before the start of his first game against his former club.

''You always want to make a stamp either way whether it means anything or not,'' Stanton said. ''It's more to get a W for us rather than just him, but it's all one in the same.''

Stanton blasted a solo home run to open the scoring in the fourth inning and a tying RBI double in the fifth. Derek Dietrich put the Marlins ahead for good with an RBI triple in the sixth.

''I look at it differently than just about me,'' Mattingly said. ''We needed a win. We've been fighting for them.''

Yasiel Puig and Trayce Thompson hit solo homers in the fourth inning for the Dodgers.

Wei-Yin Chen (1-1) pitched into the seventh inning for his first win with the Marlins while Dodgers rookie Ross Stripling (0-1) took the loss in his first career decision.

After Stanton opened the scoring, Puig hammered the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth into the right field seats to tie it up. Three batters later, Thompson launched a solo shot to left for his first home run in a Dodgers uniform to give them the lead.

Stanton tied it back up quickly though, lacing a two-out double into the right-center gap to score Christian Yelich from first in the top of the fifth to make it 2-2.

Stanton's tying double came one pitch after first baseman Yasmani Grandal misjudged Stanton's popup in foul territory that would have resulted in the third out of the inning.

''It's never what you want, to give a guy like him a second or third chance in one AB, especially when I've already thrown the kitchen sink at him and he's seen everything I have,'' Stripling said. ''I made a bad pitch after that. I was even thinking in my head I need to make a perfect pitch here because it's a big situation.''

Dietrich's RBI triple gave Miami back the lead, and Chen and the Marlins bullpen made it stand.

Chen pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up six hits and two runs, walked one and struck out four. A.J. Ramos pitched a hitless ninth for his fourth save.

The Dodgers had the tying run aboard in each of the final four innings but stranded it each time to allow Mattingly and the Marlins to come out on top.

''We've been in a lot of close games where things haven't gone on our way,'' Mattingly said. ''Whether it's a blown lead, a comeback where we can't get over the hump, but today we were able to do that. That's what I'm happy about.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: OF Carl Crawford (lower back tightness) will be activated off the disabled list before Tuesday's game. ... Roberts said OF Scott Van Slyke (lower back irritation) is feeling better but is not ready to resume baseball activities. He also added LHP Brett Anderson (herniated disc) is still ''a ways away'' from returning. ... LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder surgery) will throw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday.

CELEBRATING MONDAY

Former Dodgers outfielder Rick Monday threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the 40th anniversary of the day he saved an American flag from being burned at Dodger Stadium.

On April 25, 1976, two protesters ran onto the field and attempted to light the flag on fire in the outfield. Monday, then a member of the Chicago Cubs, raced across the outfield and snatched the flag away before it could be burned.

Monday, who is now part of the Dodgers' radio broadcast team, was honored with a video tribute replaying the incident before throwing out the first pitch.

HAPPY HOMECOMING

Stanton, who grew up in Los Angeles-area suburb Panorama City, has now hit seven home runs in 16 career games in Dodger Stadium. According to STATS, his .746 career slugging percentage at Dodger Stadium is the highest of any player (min. 50 ABs).

ROSTER MOVE

The Dodgers reinstated RHP Louis Coleman from the bereavement list and optioned LHP Luis Avilan to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Coleman was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in five relief appearances before going on the bereavement list April 21. Avilan allowed three runs in 2/3 of an inning over three appearances with the Dodgers.
