Sheffield homers as Tigers edge Phillies

Mar 1, 2007 - 10:03 PM LAKELAND, Florida (Ticker) -- Gary Sheffield got off to a thunderous start with the Detroit Tigers.

Sheffield homered in his spring-training debut as the Tigers posted a 9-7 Grapefruit League victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

A nine-time All-Star, Sheffield was traded to Detroit last November after a tumultuous season with the New York Yankees.

The volatile slugger made a loud first impression, crushing a three-run homer off lefthander Jamie Moyer to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead in the third inning.

Placido Polanco had two hits and two RBI for Detroit, which pounded out 11 hits.

Despite yielding four runs and seven hits in two innings, Eulogio De La Cruz recorded the win while fellow righthander Fernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.

Greg Dobbs had three hits, including a two-run homer, for the Phillies, who had 14 hits but committed three errors.
