Francis, Hurdle ejected as Rockies and Padres tie

Mar 14, 2007 - 12:05 AM TUCSON, Arizona (Ticker) -- Starter Jeff Francis, manager Clint Hurdle and the Colorado Rockies certainly brought their regular-season intensity.

Todd Helton blasted a three-run homer as the Rockies and San Diego Padres played to a 5-5, 10-inning tie in a Cactus League contest.

Despite the laid-back spring atmosphere, Francis was ejected in the fifth for throwing behind Padres third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff. Hurdle also was tossed in the frame for arguing a separate call.

Francis likely was frustrated after yielding five runs, seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Helton homered in the first inning off veteran lefthander David Wells, while Willy Taveras added two hits for Colorado.

Wells struggled, allowing three runs and four hits in three innings.

Non-roster invitee Manny Alexander belted a solo homer in the fourth inning off Francis.
