Cardinals' Garcia shuts out Padres

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jaime Garcia pitched his second career shutout, as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the San Diego Padres, 2-0, and avoided a three-game series sweep at Busch Stadium.

Garcia (1-0) scattered four hits, walked two and struck out nine. The lefty finished his rookie season in 2010 with an impressive 13-8 record and 2.70 earned run average over 28 starts.

"He was mid-season good," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said about Garcia. "He was so sharp, had a lot of strikeouts and pitched with a lot of composure."

Yadier Molina and Ryan Theriot each had a run-scoring single for St. Louis, which resumes its six-game homestand against Pittsburgh on Monday.

Skip Schumaker had a pair of hits and a run scored for the victors.

Jason Bartlett, Orlando Hudson and Nick Hundley had one hit apiece for the Padres, who open their 2011 home schedule Tuesday against the reigning World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

"We saw him last year. We know how good he is," Hudson said about Garcia. "He's got great stuff. Great command of his cutter, changeup. Got a good sinking fastball, curve ball. He had great command of his pitches."

Dustin Moseley (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, giving up only an unearned run on four hits and one walk in seven innings. He also added a base hit. The right-hander went 4-4 with a 4.96 earned run average in 16 games -- nine starts -- with the New York Yankees last season.

St. Louis opened the scoring with a run in the fifth. Lance Berkman started the inning with a base hit, went to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a Colby Rasmus grounder before crossing the plate on Molina's single up the middle.

The Padres threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. But Ryan Ludwick lined a 3-2 fastball to third baseman Daniel Descalso, who stepped on third to complete the double play.

St. Louis then picked up an insurance run in the eighth, as Theriot singled through the right side to score Schumaker with one out.

Garcia had no trouble in the ninth, retiring the side in order to complete the gem.

The game was played in 2:03...St. Louis was 4-3 against the Padres last season...Garcia threw 102 pitches, 65 for strikes.
