Gallardo two-hits Braves for Brewers' first win

Apr 6, 2011 - 5:11 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Yovani Gallardo faced just 28 hitters en route to two-hit shutout against the Braves, helping the Brewers earn their first win this season, 1-0.

It was also the first managerial victory for Ron Roenicke, who rode the right arm of his 25-year-old ace.

Gallardo (1-0) only recorded two strikeouts but befuddled the Braves all night, getting them to hit into 16 ground ball outs for his third career shutout. He also scored the game's only run on Ryan Braun's base hit in the third inning.

Derek Lowe (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, getting charged with one run on five hits and three walks over six innings for the Braves, who never put a runner past first base.

Gallardo erased Nate McLouth's first-inning single by getting Chipper Jones to ground into an inning-ending double play, then he hit a one-out base hit in the home third.

"He's a good hitter. It's not surprising when he gets a hit," Roenicke said of Gallardo.

Nyjer Morgan moved Gallardo into scoring position with a two-out single, and Braun's sharp liner off Jones' glove at third knocked in the only run the Mexican hurler needed.

Martin Prado worked one of Atlanta's two walks to start the fourth, but he was erased when McLouth bounced into a 1-6-1 twin killing.

Dan Uggla, whose late solo home run was the difference in Monday's 2-1 win, had Atlanta's second and final hit leading off the eighth. He appeared to steal second with one out, but slid over the bag and was tagged out.

The Brewers had two runners thrown out at the plate in the bottom half, but Gallardo retired Eric Hinske, pinch-hitter Freddie Freeman and Martin Prado in the ninth to complete his gem.

"I was going to go out there no matter what. I wasn't going to let them take me out," Gallardo said.
