Haren, Angels keep Rays winless

Apr 6, 2011 - 8:33 PM St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Alberto Callaspo hit a solo homer and Dan Haren went a strong 7 2/3 innings, as the Angels downed Tampa Bay, 5-1, to sweep a brief two-game set at Tropicana Field.

Mark Trumbo went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and Jeff Mathis doubled twice and knocked in a run for the Angels, who have won two in a row after losing the previous three.

Haren (1-0) dazzled, yielding only one run on four hits and struck out six without issuing a walk.

B.J. Upton accounted for the offense with a homer for Tampa Bay, which has dropped all five of its games to start the season.

Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a pair of walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.

The right-hander, who was two days shy of his 24th birthday, reached the majors with the Rays late last season and made 10 appearances -- four starts -- with a 4-0 record and a 3.47 earned run average.

LA opened the scoring with a run in the first. Howie Kendrick worked a one-out walk and came around to score on Bobby Abreu's double down the right-field line.

Callaspo's two-out homer to right in the fourth made it a 2-0 game.

Upton led off the fifth with a shot into the left-field seats to get the Rays on the board.

Hellickson gave up a two-out single to Trumbo in the sixth and was promptly lifted after throwing 99 pitches -- 64 strikes. Adam Russell came in and served up a Jeff Mathis run-scoring double that hit off the glove of Matt Joyce in right.

Tampa Bay stranded a runner on third in the sixth, then in the eighth, Trumbo slapped a run-scoring single to right, giving LA a 4-1 lead.

Haren was taken out with a runner on first and two down in the home eighth. Kevin Jepsen came in and got pinch-hitter Manny Ramirez to fly out to shallow right.

Torii Hunter added an RBI single in the top of the ninth and Jordan Walden threw a perfect home half to close out his second straight game, although in a non-save situation.
