Valdez, Phils dominate Mets

Apr 8, 2011 - 2:34 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Wilson Valdez collected a career-high four hits, with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies finished off a series victory by pounding the New York Mets, 11-0, at Citizens Bank Park.

Placido Polanco went 2-for-5 and knocked in four runs and Raul Ibanez added a two-run home run and scored three times for the Phillies, who won two of three in the set and improved to 5-1 for the second straight year.

"We're playing well together and gelling as a team," said Ibanez. "This was a good collective effort offensively, defensively, pitching-wise."

Roy Halladay (1-0) tossed seven scoreless innings, yielding only six hits and a walk while fanning seven.

Jose Reyes posted two hits for the Mets, who fell to 3-3 on the season.

"We're 3-and-3 on the road, then we get to go home, play in front of our fans for the first time...the energy will be rekindled," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "They swung that bats well the last two nights, we couldn't stop them, and when you can't do that you're not going to win."

Jon Niese (0-1) was charged in defeat for six runs on eight hits but struck out seven over four frames.

Halladay's only trouble in the game came in the top of the third, when Josh Thole, Reyes and Willie Harris singled to load the bases with one down. However, the reigning NL Cy Young winner responded by fanning David Wright swinging and inducing an inning-ending groundout from Ike Davis.

"There are times when you feel like you're in trouble, but I felt like I could make pitches to get out of it," Halladay said of his one rough patch. "It's something you want to avoid, but it's something I felt I could control."

The Phils then gave him some breathing room in the home half with two runs thanks to a Shane Victorino RBI single and Polanco's run-scoring double.

In the fourth, four more runs crossed the plate on a Carlos Ruiz single, Valdez double and a Polanco two-run base hit.

Valdez added a two-run double in the fifth but was thrown out at third to end the inning as the Phillies were able to assume an 8-0 advantage.

In the seventh, Ryan Howard reached on a fielder's choice and Ibanez launched a two-run shot to the seats in right to put the home team in double digits.

Polanco's fielder's choice RBI in the eighth made it 11-0.

Halladay completed his outing by retiring nine of the last 10 batters. Danys Baez and David Herndon each turned in scoreless relief innings to complete the rout.
