Pirates top Rox in 14 innings

Apr 9, 2011 - 5:20 AM Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jose Tabata doubled high off the wall in right field to drive in Josh Rodriguez with the winning run in the 14th inning, sending Pittsburgh over Colorado, 4-3, in the second test of a four- game series.

Franklin Morales (0-1) walked Rodriguez with two outs before Tabata, who homered in the fifth, delivered the winning hit off the scoreboard.

"I was looking for one pitch," Tabata said. "I thought if he threw a fastball up, I'd put a good swing on it.

Jason Giambi belted a three-run homer in the opening inning for the Rockies, but Colorado wasted numerous opportunities. The Rockies went 1-for-15 with men in scoring position and stranded 14 base runners.

Garrett Olson (1-1) threw the final two innings to get the win.

Pittsburgh scored a run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth to tie the game. Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen worked back-to-back walks to begin the fourth. The runners moved up on a groundout and Walker scored on Matt Diaz's groundout.

Tabata's shot to center in the fifth made it a 3-2 game. Matt Belisle started on the mound for the Pirates in the sixth. Lyle Overbay and Pedro Alvarez walked to put two men on with two outs. Overbay advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jason Jaramillo's single to make it a 3-3 game.

The Pirates had a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Walker went down swinging to send the game into extras.

Colorado wasted a bases-loaded chance in the 10th and again in the top of the 14th. In that inning, pinch-hitter Todd Helton grounded out to end the threat.

The Rockies got to Ohlendorf in the first inning. Dexter Fowler walked and Jonathan Herrera singled to start the game. Following two quick outs, Giambi smacked Ohlendorf's offering over the wall in right for a 3-0 lead.
