Reds try to avoid third straight loss in Arizona

Apr 9, 2011 - 2:42 PM (Sports Network) - Righty Daniel Hudson hopes for the same sort of offensive outburst his teammates provided Ian Kennedy when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue a three-game series with the visiting Cincinnati Reds tonight at Chase Field.

Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in Arizona's 13-2 rout of the Reds in Friday's series opener - also the team's home opener after a five-game trip to begin the year.

Miguel Montero had three hits, two runs scored and one driven in, Kelly Johnson belted a three-run homer and Xavier Nady doubled in a pair, while Kennedy (1-0) tossed eight innings of one-run ball.

The 26-year-old righty allowed six hits and a walk while fanning nine.

Travis Wood (1-1) was knocked around for six runs on seven hits in five-plus frames for the Reds, who have dropped consecutive games after starting the season 5-0.

Hudson, who turned 24 in March, was a fifth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2008 and appeared in three games with the team to begin 2010 before he was dealt to Arizona with a minor-leaguer in a trade that sent starter Edwin Jackson to Chicago on July 30.

He made an immediate impact with the Diamondbacks the rest of the way, winning seven of eight decisions over 11 starts while posting a sterling 1.69 earned run average in 79 2/3 innings.

Hudson faced Cincinnati twice last season and was equally effective, splitting two decisions but allowing just 13 hits and three earned runs in 15 innings, while walking one batter and striking out 18.

In 120 career big-league innings, opponents have hit just .209 off Hudson.

The Reds counter with veteran righty Bronson Arroyo, who kicked his 2011 off with seven innings of six-hit, three-run ball in a 12-3 defeat of Milwaukee on April 3.'

The 34-year-old Key West, Fla. native is coming off his best season of a 10- year big-league career, in which he won a personal-best 17 games and posted a 3.88 ERA as the Reds reached the playoffs for the first time since 1995.

Arroyo is 3-3 lifetime against Arizona in 10 appearances with a 4.63 ERA in 56 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati won five of its seven meetings with the D'Backs last season.
