Yanks hit four homers, hand Red Sox another loss

Apr 10, 2011 - 12:03 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Russell Martin hit two of New York's four homers and drove in four runs, as the Yankees earned a 9-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the second of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson also homered for the Yankees, who bounced back from Friday's 9-6 loss in Boston's home opener to win for the fifth time in eight games this season. Cano finished 3-for-5 and Eric Chavez contributed three hits with a pair of doubles and a run batted in for New York.

Dustin Pedroia doubled three times and drove in two runs for Boston, which finally notched its first win of the season on Friday after starting the campaign with six straight losses.

Clay Buchholz (0-2) took the loss for the second time in as many starts this season. He was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

New York starter Ivan Nova didn't work the requisite five innings and failed to qualify for a win. He gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. David Robertson (1-0) retired all five batters he faced in relief and picked up the victory on his 26th birthday.

The Yankees grabbed the lead with two runs in the second. Alex Rodriguez reached on an error by shortstop Jed Lowrie to start the inning, raced to third on a double by Cano and scored on Nick Swisher's grounder to second. Chavez later doubled home Cano.

"He tried to come in with fastballs off the plate and when he missed the next pitch out over the plate they made some pretty solid contact," Boston manager Terry Francona said of his starting pitcher.

After the Yankees stranded a pair of runners in the third, Boston got one back in the bottom of the frame. Pedroia led off with a double, took third on a grounder by Adrian Gonzalez and scored on another ground ball off the bat of Kevin Youkilis.

The Yankees responded with three in the fourth. Granderson led off with a walk and Chavez followed with his second double before Martin lifted a fly ball over the Green Monster in left field for his second homer as a Yankee to make it 5-1.

"He's done a great job for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Martin, who is making the transition from the National League. "I know you play a little interleague, [but it's new to him.] I thought he would produce for us."

Boston came right back with three in the home half. J.D. Drew was hit by a pitch to start the inning and raced to third on a single by Lowrie before scoring on a fielder's choice grounder by Jacoby Ellsbury. Carl Crawford followed with a base hit and Pedroia chased home both runners with a double for a one-run game.

Granderson extended the lead to 7-4 with two-run blast just inside the right field foul pole off Boston reliever Felix Doubront in the fifth. The Red Sox threatened to get right back into in the bottom of the inning when Youkilis singled and Drew walked with one out, but Robertson came and retired the next two batters.

"He threw the ball well for us," Girardi said about Robertson, "then we kept adding on [runs]."

Cano connected off Alfredo Aceves in the sixth for his second homer of the year and Martin added his second home run of the game in the seventh to make it 9-4.

After Joba Chamberlain set down Boston's 3-4-5 hitters in the home seventh, the Red Sox left two aboard in the eighth against Luis Ayala. Pedroia then started the ninth with a double and Youkilis drew a walk, but Ayala got David Ortiz to hit into a game-ending double play.

Game Notes

The Red Sox left 10 runners on base and finished just 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position...Cano has 11 homers and is a career .367 hitter in 54 games at Fenway Park...Rodriguez stroked a pair of hits for New York, which banged out 13 for the contest...The teams will conclude the series Sunday night with CC Sabathia set to take the mound for the Yankees against Boston righty Josh Beckett...Reports during the game indicated that the Yankees agreed to a contract with pitcher Carlos Silva, who was released by the Cubs at the end of spring training.
