Kershaw, Dodgers seek another win over Giants
Apr 11, 2011 - 3:05 PM (Sports Network) - Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers didn't seem very impressed during the season's opening week that the San Francisco Giants were coming off a World Series title. The Dodgers try for their fourth victory in five early-season meetings with the Giants tonight when the two National League West rivals start up a three- game series at AT&T Park.
San Francisco began defense of the franchise's first title since 1954 with a four- game set in Los Angeles on March 31-April 3, but dropped three of four to the Dodgers. Kershaw set the tone on Opening Day, holding the Giants to just four hits over seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over Tim Lincecum. Kershaw struck out Buster Posey and Andrew Torres twice each, while Aubrey Huff, Pat Burrell and Miguel Tejada combined to go 0- for-9 off the left-hander.
Kershaw, who improved to 2-1 with a 1.23 earned run average in seven games (six starts) lifetime versus the Dodgers, wasn't as lucky next time out, taking a loss to the Rockies last Tuesday. The 23-year-old yielded three runs on six hits over six innings, striking out another eight.
The Dodgers have lost three of five since their series win over the Giants and had a two-game win streak stopped yesterday with a 7-2 loss to the Padres. Andre Ethier had an RBI, but John Ely yielded four runs over 5 2/3 innings after being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day.
"I was a little disappointed today," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "I thought we would at least put more pressure on them, as far as being able to get runners out there and do some things."
Los Angeles played without shortstop Rafael Furcal, who is batting a sore left wrist.
San Francisco also had a winning streak halted Sunday after it lost to St. Louis, 6-1. The Giants had won three straight since a 1-4 start.
With Posey, Burrell and Tejada all getting the day off, Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse held the Giants to one run and five hits over eight innings. Barry Zito, meanwhile, was charged with four runs on six hits and five walks over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
"(Lohse) was on top of his game, threw a lot of strikes, quality strikes," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's kind of where it started. We had some guys we needed to give a day off, and it's good to give some guys some at- bats, but we saw a well-pitched game against us today."
Freddy Sanchez had two hits and Pablo Sandoval drove home the lone Giants run.
Bochy will go with 21-year-old Madison Bumgarner in the opener of this set. After going 7-6 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 starts last year, Bumgarner made his season debut last Tuesday in San Diego and gave up three runs on five hits and three walks in just three innings of work to take a loss.
The southpaw has made just one previous career start against the Dodgers, getting a win on July 19 of last season after giving up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.
