Cardinals visit Diamondbacks at Chase Field

Apr 11, 2011 - 3:08 PM (Sports Network) - Career reliever Kyle McClellan makes the second start of his major-league career tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals head to Chase Field to begin a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A 25th-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2002 draft, McClellan reached the big leagues in 2008 and made 202 appearances in his first three seasons - all out of the bullpen.

He was called into starting duty this season for a St. Louis team already saddled with the absence of ace Adam Wainwright, who will miss all of 2011 due to injury.

McClellan was up to the task in his initial game-opening run-through, allowing just six hits and two runs in six innings while getting a no-decision in a 3-2 Cardinals win at Pittsburgh on April 5.

He's made nine lifetime appearances against the Diamondbacks and is 0-2 with a blown save while allowing 17 hits and 12 runs in nine innings.

Arizona counters with 25-year-old righty Barry Enright, who'll try again for the first win of his second big-league season.

The Pepperdine University product - a second-round pick in 2007 - was 6-7 with Arizona in 17 starts last season while compiling a 3.91 earned run average across 99 innings.

He debuted for 2011 in April 5 in Chicago and was touched for seven hits and four runs in six innings of a game the Cubs eventually won, 6-5.

Enright won his lone rookie-season start against St. Louis after going five innings and surrendering just one run on four hits.

On Sunday in San Francisco, David Freese had three hits, including a solo home run, and knocked in three, as the Cardinals topped the Giants, 6-1, to avoid the three-game series sweep.

Skip Schumaker had two hits and two RBI for St. Louis, which snapped a three- game losing streak.

Kyle Lohse (1-1) was stunning in his second start of the season, going eight innings while allowing one run on five hits. He lost his first outing in a 4-3 decision against Pittsburgh on Monday.

In Arizona, Chris Young capped a four-run eighth inning with a three-run homer, as the Diamondbacks rallied past the Cincinnati Reds, 10-8, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Young drove in a total of four runs for the D-Backs, who also got a three-run homer from Ryan Roberts. Stephen Drew went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Joe Saunders lasted just three innings, allowing five runs - four earned - on six hits. Aaron Heilman (1-0) got the win despite giving up two runs on two hits over three innings.

The Cardinals captured five of their nine meetings with the Diamondbacks a season ago.
