Young, Diamondbacks down Cardinals

Apr 13, 2011 - 6:48 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Chris Young went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and Justin Upton belted a three-run homer, as Arizona beat St. Louis, 13-8, in a high-scoring middle game of a three-game set.

"We had to go out there and slug it out," Upton said. "We were able to win the battle."

Juan Miranda also had a three-run shot for the Diamondbacks, who lost the first game to St. Louis 8-2 on Monday. Armando Galarraga (2-0) got the win in five innings, despite allowing five runs on nine hits.

Lance Berkman, David Freese and Colby Rasmus each had a solo blast for the Cardinals, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Chris Carpenter (0-2) is still in search of his first win of the season after getting roughed up for eight runs on eight hits in four innings.

Neither teams had trouble scoring in this one as the Diamondbacks plated 13 runs on 14 hits, while St. Louis posted 16 hits.

"It was a tough day for pitchers," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

Trailing by four, 9-5, in the sixth, the Cardinals put up three runs to make it interesting.

John Jay walked, and Ryan Theriot and Rasmus each singled to start the inning. Jay scored on Rasmus' hit and the Cardinals had two runners on with the meat of their lineup, Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday, up. However, Kam Mikolio fanned both batters.

Berkman didn't follow suit, though, lining a shot into center to plate Theriot and Freese knocked in Rasmus to cap off the rally.

The Diamondbacks countered right back, though, during their turn in the sixth to pin up four runs. Three of them came from Miranda's homer into right center and Arizona was back in the driver's seat.

Neither teams were able to score the rest of the way, giving the home team the win.

Arizona scored twice during the bottom of the first as Stephen Drew and Young each drove in runs. But St. Louis would answer in its next at-bat with back- to-back homers from Berkman and Freese.

The offense continued to flourish during the bottom of the second as Arizona posted three runs to take a 5-2 lead. With two outs, Willie Bloomquist doubled, Kelly Johnson was hit by a pitch and Upton brought them both home with a towering shot deep into the concourse in left.

The two teams traded runs in the third, making it a 6-3 game. The home team then extended it to a five-run lead in the fourth on Young's two-run homer.

Holliday's single scored Theriot in the fifth. During the same inning, St. Louis looked to have a possible big rally again, with the bases loaded, however, the club only scored one when Skip Schumaker drew a walk to force Pujols home for a 8-5 game.

Arizona added a run during the bottom of the inning, before giving up the big lead and then regaining it again.

Game Notes

Arizona manager Kirk Gibson was ejected during the third following a confrontation with home plate ump Bob Davidson over a swinging strike call on Russell Branyan...St. Louis was 5-4 against the D'Backs last season...Pujols finished 3-for-5 for the Cardinals, who also got three hits from Theriot.
