Cardinals, Dodgers continue series at Chavez Ravine
Apr 15, 2011 - 2:31 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers are counting on Jon Garland to get them back into the win column this evening when he makes his 2011 debut tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals in the second meeting of a four-game set at Chavez Ravine.Garland was signed in the offseason to bolster an already promising rotation, but suffered an oblique injury during Spring Training and was placed on the disabled list. Garland, who pitched for LA back in 2009, was a member of the rival San Diego Padres a year ago and went 14-12 with a 3.47 earned run average in 33 starts.
The right-hander tossed a rehab start last week for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and will make his sixth career start against St. Louis. He is just 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA in the first five starts. Los Angeles could use a solid performance on the mound and has dropped three straight and four of five games. In Thursday's 9-5 loss to the Cardinals in the opener of this series, Hiroki Kuroda suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) after surrendering six runs -- five earned -- and 10 hits over five innings.
"This is the kind of club that's going to score," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of St. Louis. "We have to find a way to shut them down."
Lance Cormier allowed three runs, one of which was earned, in two innings of relief for the Dodgers, who were outhit by a 16-11 margin and received a big night from Matt Kemp. Kemp finished with three hits, including his second home run of the season, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jamey Carroll also had three hits with an RBI and scored twice in defeat.
Los Angeles will also host Atlanta for four games on the homestand. Before tonight's game, Major League Baseball will commemorate the eighth annual Jackie Robinson Day and launch a new online campaign 'IAM42.com'. All players and on-field personnel will wear the number 42 in recognition of Robinson, who broke into the league with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Cardinals have been on a hit parade lately with at least 14 in four straight games and 16 over the past three. In a 16-hit attack last night in Hollywood, Albert Pujols homered and Matt Holliday collected three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored for St. Louis, winners in two straight and four of five contests.
Yadier Molina posted two hits and two RBI, while Ryan Theriot, Colby Rasmus and Lance Berkman each collected a pair of hits.
"We've been swinging the bats well the last five or six games," said Holliday, who has nine hits and seven RBI to go with a .391 average so far.
The 14 or more hits are the most for the Cardinals since turning the trick from May 30-June 2, 1979 (65 total). St. Louis ran its total to 53 over the current streak.
Jaime Garcia benefited from the plate awareness by his teammates and improved to 2-0 on the season, giving up three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits through the first five innings.
Scheduled to take the mound for Tony La Russa's club tonight is righty Kyle Lohse. Lohse is 1-1 with a 3.00 earned run average in two starts and is fresh off a fine performance in San Francisco on Sunday. He held the defending champions to one run on five hits in eight innings and struck out five batters. Lohse did not walk a batter.
Lohse will try to even his career mark against the Dodgers, as he is 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA in six lifetime appearances (4 starts).
After the Dodgers swept the Cardinals in three games in LA last June, St. Louis returned the favor by taking all four meetings in July at Busch Stadium.
