Angels send red-hot Weaver to the hill against White Sox
Apr 15, 2011 - 2:34 PM (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver goes after his fourth win in as many starts this evening when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim open a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.Weaver has been magnificent in winning his first three starts, as he has allowed just two runs and has struck out 27 batters in 20 2/3 innings. Fifteen of those punchouts came on Sunday against Toronto, which managed a mere run and five hits off the right-hander in 7 2/3 innings.
"I had command of my fastball early and my slider was really sharp," said Weaver. "It was overall a good game."
Weaver is 4-2 lifetime against the White Sox with a 1.70 ERA in seven starts.
The Angels enter this matchup riding a two-game winning streak after taking the final two games of their three-game series with the Cleveland Indians. On Wednesday, LA secured the series victory, as Jeff Mathis scored Vernon Wells on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th inning, lifting the Halos to a 4-3 win.
Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, while Howie Kendrick scored on a two-base throwing error from his double to begin the frame as Los Angeles won for the fourth time in five games.
"It feels good [to win] because we just played a hot team," Hunter said of the Indians. "Just to cool those guys down shows that we are playing well right now."
Angels starter Ervin Santana went seven-plus innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three. Hisanori Takahashi (1-0) got the win for pitching a hitless final two innings.
Chicago, meanwhile, watched its bullpen blow another contest on Wednesday when it was denied a series victory over the Oakland Athletics in 7-4, 10-inning setback.
John Danks was solid over eight innings for Chicago, giving up just one run on five hits. However, Matt Thornton (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits over one inning of work to suffer the loss. He also suffered his fourth blown save of the season.
"There's nothing to even describe it right now. Frustration is pretty high," Thornton said. "Confidence isn't the problem. It's my frustration right now. It's the most frustrated I've been in a long time. I can't remember a run of games like this where I haven't gotten the job done that many times in a row."
Brent Morel, Ramon Castro and Gordon Beckham each drove in a run for the White Sox, who have led in all 12 games they have played this season, but fell to 4-3 on their current 10-game homestand.
Getting the call for the Pale Hose tonight will be righty Philip Humber, who won his first start on Saturday. In just the third start of his career Humber silenced the Tampa Bay Rays, holding them to a run and four hits over six innings.
"I didn't shake [catcher] A.J. [Pierzynski] off but once or twice," Humber said of his outing.
This will be his first-ever start against the Angels. He did face them once out of the bullpen and did not allow a run in two innings of work.
Chicago has won seven straight games from the Angels.
