Toronto keeps Boston in a rut

Apr 16, 2011 - 6:16 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Aaron Hill went 3-for-4 and drove in the final run in Toronto's four-run seventh inning, proving to be the difference as the Blue Jays kept the Red Sox in a rut with a 7-6 victory.

The loss dropped Boston to 2-10, matching the worst start in club history.

Corey Patterson hit a two-run triple for Toronto, which snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-3 win at Seattle on Wednesday.

Brett Cecil (1-1) was credited with the win after allowing three runs on two hits and four walks in his six-inning start.

Bobby Jenks (0-1) gave up four runs in the seventh while recording just one out behind starter Clay Buchholz, who also struggled on the hill and failed to get through the sixth.

Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis each homered for Boston.

"We're in a tough division. To come back now it's going to take all year long," Jenks said. "We need to get on it now if we're going to turn this thing around."

A cold evening at Fenway Park turned bitter for the home fans in the seventh.

With the score tied and runners on first and second, Jose Bautista hit a line drive off the Green Monster to bring in Jayson Nix with the go-ahead run, sparking the pivotal rally.

Adam Lind followed with a run-scoring base hit, Bautista scored on a wild pitch and Hill ended Jenks' miserable outing with an RBI single to left.

Boston pulled within a run in eighth, as pinch-hitter Jed Lowrie beat out an infield single to score Youkilis and Marco Scutaro doubled over the head of Travis Snider in left to bring in a pair.

But Casey Janssen got Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out to right to leave Scutaro on second, and Jon Rauch retired the top of Boston's order in succession in the ninth for his third save of the season.

Carl Crawford finished an 0-for-5 night by striking out to start the final inning, Pedroia grounded out weakly to short and Adrian Gonzalez, who signed a seven-year contract extension worth a reported $154 million hours before the game, dribbled one to first to finish off another Boston loss.

"This is a good win for us," said John Farrell, who served as Boston's pitching coach from 2007-10 before taking his first managerial job with the Blue Jays this past offseason.

Instant replay reversed a three-run homer by Lind in the first inning, as the ball narrowly hooked out of play before the right-field foul pole.

The Red Sox left the bases loaded in the second, but got on the board with a pair of home runs in their next at-bat.

The first hit of the game from either side came in the bottom of the third when Pedroia barely cleared the imposing wall in left. After Gonzalez worked a walk, Youkilis took Cecil deep to straightaway center.

Walks to Juan Rivera and Nix cost Buchholz in the fifth, as Patterson smoked a ball into the right-field corner with two away to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Snider brought in the tying run in the sixth when Crawford couldn't come down with his drive to left.

The Sox also started 2-10 in 1925, 1927 and 1996...Buchholz, who allowed one earned run in three starts against the Blue Jays last year, was charged with three runs on three hits and five walks in five-plus innings of work...Cecil was 9-2 in 13 starts vs. the AL East last season...In the second meeting of the four-game set on Saturday, the Red Sox will face another lefty in Jo-Jo Reyes, who will pitch opposite Josh Beckett.
