Tigers, A's resume set at the Coliseum

Apr 16, 2011 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - Justin Verlander hopes for some run support this evening when the Detroit Tigers continue their four-game series with the Oakland Athletics at the Coliseum.

Verlander has been terrific in his three starts this season, but has just one win to show for it. He was saddled with his first loss of the season on Monday against Texas, despite throwing a complete game that saw him allow two runs and six hits in a 2-0 setback.

"I don't think it's terribly disappointing for me. I think it's terribly disappointing for the team," Verlander said after the loss. "I think we tried to battle as much as we could."

Verlander is 4-4 lifetime against the A's with a 2.85 ERA in nine starts.

Oakland will counter with lefty Dallas Braden, who is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA. After losing his initial start to the season, Braden was impressive against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, allowing a run and five hits in six innings. He also struck out seven, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 win.

Braden has faced the Tigers eight times and is 2-4 against them with a 6.75 ERA.

In the second game of this series on Friday Miguel Cabrera sent the game to extra innings with a homer in the ninth, and the Tigers scored seven runs in the 10th to get by the Oakland Athletics, 8-4.

"We were able to get the big blow from our star," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland, who became the 19th manager to achieve 1,500 wins. "You have to win tough games on the road, and that's what we did."

Brennan Boesch finished with three hits and highlighted the extra frame with a two-run double for Detroit's fourth straight win. Brayan Villarreal (1-0) got the final two outs of the ninth to earn his first major league victory.

Brian Fuentes (0-2), Oakland's closer with Andrew Bailey on the disabled list, surrendered Cabrera's homer and five more runs -- three earned -- in the 10th to take the loss.

Detroit split its six meetings with the A's last season.
