Kershaw attempts to silence Cards' bats at Chavez Ravine
Apr 16, 2011 - 2:56 PM (Sports Network) - Clayton Kershaw tries to continue his impressive start to the season this evening when the Los Angeles Dodgers resume their four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.Kershaw was again brilliant against the defending world champion San Francisco Giants on Monday, as he scattered six hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to run his record to 2-1, while lowering his earned run average to 1.37. He also struck out seven and has fanned 24 batters in 19 2/3 innings.
"I threw more curveballs than in the past," said Kershaw, who threw 117 pitches. "It was better than my slider and I went to it more. I made pitches when I had to."
Kershaw, who is 2-1 in six starts against the Cardinals, will need to be better than Jon Garland was on Friday for the Dodgers, as Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman each belted a pair of home runs as part of a 19-hit attack, and the Cardinals rolled to an 11-2 win.
Kyle Lohse (2-1) allowed six hits and two runs, while fanning six batters to get the win.
"I didn't have my best change-up, but overall I felt pretty good," Lohse said. "I was able to hit my spots. One thousand strikeouts, it feels pretty good. It's a good feeling to be able to be out there long enough to get it."
Colby Rasmus had three doubles and scored twice for St. Louis, which won for the fifth time in six games. The Cardinals have been scoring runs in bunches, as they have crossed the plate 57times over their last six contests.
Yadier Molina and David Freese joined the hit parade with four and three, respectively. St. Louis has 35 hits over the first two games of this series and has managed at least 14 in its last five.
Garland (0-1) lost in his 2011 debut, giving up nine hits and five runs over four-plus innings. Garland was signed in the offseason to bolster an already promising rotation, but suffered an oblique injury during spring training and was placed on the disabled list.
"He wasn't as sharp as we would have liked," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Berkman got him a couple of times. Jon's a guy I know is going to bounce back and he'll be sharp for us."
The Dodgers lost their fourth straight game.
St. Louis will hand the ball tonight to right-hander Kyle McClellan, who picked up his first win of the season his last time out. After getting a no- decision in his initial outing, McClellan was terrific in beating the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, as he allowed a run and seven hits in six innings.
"I got lucky a couple times," said McClellan, who has pitched to a 2.25 ERA. "I got fastballs up to hit. I got a couple runs scored today for our team and kept their pitcher out there a little bit, made him throw more pitches. You don't just want to give up on an at-bat."
This will be McClellan's first-ever start against the Dodgers, but he has faced them 10 times in relief and is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA against them.
After the Dodgers swept the Cardinals in three games in LA last June, St. Louis returned the favor by taking all four meetings in July at Busch Stadium.
