Gonzalez goes deep twice in Braves' win over Mets

Apr 17, 2011 - 12:01 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Alex Gonzalez hit two of Atlanta's four solo home runs to help the Braves take a 4-2 win over the New York Mets in the opener of a twin-bill from Turner Field.

The two clubs were to start the three-game series on Friday, but rain made this a twinbill.

Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman each hit a solo home run for the Braves, who had dropped four of five coming into the game. Derek Lowe (2-2) went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win.

"Good pitching, Lowe was outstanding today and gave us six strong innings," said Gonzalez. "Bullpen shut things down the rest of the way and now we move on to tomorrow."

Jose Reyes and Willie Harris each drove in a run for the Mets, who have lost their past six games. D.J. Carrasco (0-1) got the loss as he gave up three runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in just 3 2/3 innings of work.

"All in all I kind of lost control of things toward the end there," said Carrasco. "They beat me cleanly, what else can you do."

Jones hit the 438th home run of his career in the first while Gonzalez led off the second with a shot over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead.

Gonzalez hit his second of the game in the fourth for a 3-0 advantage.

In the fifth, back-to-back singles from Josh Thole and Scott Hairston put runners on the corners and Reyes followed with a fielder's choice grounder that plated a run to make it a 3-1 game.

The Mets made it a one-run game in the sixth as Carlos Beltran worked a walk and later scored on Harris' double.

However, Freeman's blast over the right field wall in the bottom of the frame made it a two-run game again.

Eric O'Flaherty and Scott Linebrink combined to pitch the seventh, Jonny Venters worked around a walk in the eighth and Craig Kimbrel threw the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
