Detroit won the opener of this set by an 8-3 score on Monday thanks to a pair of hits and three RBI from Jhonny Peralta and six strong innings from unbeaten starter Max Scherzer. Scherzer improved to 3-0 this season with six innings of two-run ball and seven strikeouts.
Miguel Cabrera ended with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while Brennan Boesch added two hits and knocked in a run in Detroit's fifth win over the past seven tries.
"We got some big hits," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It took us a while, but we got them."
Phil Coke takes the ball for Detroit tonight and is 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. He won his previous start last Thursday in a 3-0 shutout of Oakland by hurling seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball.
The left-hander struck out two and walked a pair of batters in his fourth appearance -- second start -- of the season. Coke has no record and a 1.35 earned run average in eight career relief chances against Seattle.
Seattle lost for the fifth time in six tries with last night's defeat. Jason Vargas pitched the first six innings and was reached for a pair of runs on six hits with four K's in the no-decision. Josh Lueke was dealt the loss for yielding four runs and three hits in just one-third of an inning in relief.
"Vargas was really good again," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He gave us every opportunity. That's what we're looking for, our starting pitching to give us an opportunity to win ballgames and that's what they're doing."
Milton Bradley and Justin Smoak each homered for Seattle, which fell to 5-12 on the young season.
Mariners starter Doug Fister is still searching for his first win of the 2011 campaign and is 0-3 with a 3.86 earned run average this season. He last toed the rubber in Thursday's 5-1 loss at Kansas City, where he surrendered five runs and eight hits in a season-high seven innings.
Fister, who had a season-best five strikeouts in the loss to the Royals, will make his third career start against Detroit tonight. He is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two career starts in this series.
Seattle took five of its eight meetings with the Tigers last season, including wins in four of the five matchups in the Emerald City.
