Tigers shut down White Sox

Penny (1-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth and finished with two walks and three strikeouts. He had given up 20 runs in 21 1/3 innings over his first four starts of the season.
"I was just throwing strikes and cut out the walks," Penny said. "Tonight we had great defense and turned out a lot of runs."
The shutout was made easy by a Tigers offense that churned out 15 hits. Alex Avila had three of them, including a two-run triple during a five-run fourth inning. Ryan Raburn also drove in three for Detroit, which has won three in a row.
Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (2-2) was rocked for eight runs -- seven earned -- in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed 12 hits and four walks as the White Sox lost for the ninth time in 10 games.
"Guys have bad outings. They just happen," Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski said of Jackson. "But he battled."
The Tigers broke out in the fourth, which Brennan Boesch opened with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Raburn's base hit to left.
After Jhonny Peralta reached on an error by left fielder Juan Pierre, Avila tripled to center to make it a 3-0 game. Brandon Inge brought Avila home with a single, and later scored when Magglio Ordonez grounded into a fielder's choice.
Penny lost a perfect game bid by hitting Carlos Quentin with a pitch in the fourth. He had a no-hitter until Brent Morel hit an infield single with one away in the sixth, and followed by walking Pierre, but retired the next two batters.
Detroit then tacked on three more runs in the bottom half, starting with Miguel Cabrera's RBI double. Raburn hit a sacrifice fly with a bases loaded and one down, and Peralta followed with an RBI single.
Raburn's eighth-inning single plated the game's final run.
Game Notes
Morel had two of Chicago's five hits...The White Sox left nine on base...Avila's triple was the first of his 149-game career.
