Late rally pushes Reds past Cardinals

Miguel Cairo added a two-run hit in the deciding frame, and Joey Votto hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who lost the series opener, 4-2, on Friday.
"The last two days have been kind of rainy and with the delays and all it was nice to get a win here today," said Cairo.
Aroldis Chapman (1-0) recorded the final outs in the seventh to win in relief of Travis Wood. Cincinnati's starter allowed eight hits and three runs while fanning five over 6 1/3 innings.
Albert Pujols hit a solo shot and David Freese added two hits with an RBI for the Cardinals, who had won three in a row.
Miguel Batista (1-1) took the loss, charged with three unearned runs in two- thirds of an inning. Chris Carpenter made his 300th career start and yielded two runs on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six full frames.
"We made several mistakes and when you do that, most of the time you're not going to come out with a win," said St. Louis manager Tony La Russa.
The game was delayed due to rain prior to the top of the eighth for 42 minutes, and it clearly helped the visitors, who rallied from a 3-2 deficit to take the lead for good.
Batista began the frame, but his defense deserted him as Freese's bad throw on a Drew Stubbs grounder put the Cincy outfielder on second with one out. Votto was given a free pass two batters later, then Jonny Gomes was plunked to load the bases.
Trever Miller came on but walked Bruce to force in the tying run, then Ryan Franklin gave up Cairo's go-ahead two-run single before retiring pinch-hitter Jeremy Hermida.
Logan Ondrusek turned in a scoreless eighth and Francisco Cordero earned his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Freese plated Lance Berkman in the St. Louis second, and the Cards went up 2-0 in the third on a Colby Rasmus sacrifice fly.
Brandon Phillips walked with one down in the sixth and Votto cleared the wall in left-center to tie the game.
Pujols put the home team back on top with a one-out solo blast in the home half.
Wood was taken out in the seventh after a leadoff double from Yadier Molina and Nick Punto's sac bunt. Chapman retired the next two batters to keep it a one-run contest.
