Yankees top Orioles in extras

Apr 25, 2011 - 1:03 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - A combination of infield singles and errors allowed the Yankees to score three runs in the top of the 11th and claim a 6-3 win over the Orioles.

Russell Martin, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson hit run-scoring infield singles, and errors on two of them allowed runners to advance, further enabling the rally.

Jeter had four hits while Granderson added a two-run homer and finished 3- for-5 for the Yankees, who blew a one-run lead in the ninth but pulled out their third consecutive win. They swept this two-game series, which was shortened by Friday's rainout.

Mark Reynolds slammed a two-run homer for the Orioles, who have dropped three in a row and 11 of 13.

The 11th inning began after rain interrupted the game for 40 minutes, and the Yankees' rally started with Robinson Cano's leadoff double off Jason Berken (0-1).

Cano stole third, and Berken struck out Nick Swisher before intentionally walking pinch-hitter Eric Chavez.

The string of infield singles began with Martin's hit to short, and Robert Andino's throwing error allowed Chavez to move to third. Berken then fanned Brett Gardner, but Jeter hit a ball to third.

A charging Reynolds had no play at the plate -- Chavez scored to make it 5-3 -- and his throw to first sailed wide to put runners on second and third.

Granderson followed with a hard-hit ball toward the hole on the right side of the infield and it caromed off the glove of a diving Brian Roberts. Martin crossed the plate to put the Yankees up by three.

Boone Logan (1-1), who had thrown a scoreless 10th for New York, got the first out of the home 11th. Buddy Carlyle got the final two outs to end the game.

The Yankees controlled the game through the early innings thanks to Freddy Garcia, who tossed six shutout innings for the second consecutive start. On Sunday he gave up two hits, walked two and struck out seven.

He also got run support before throwing one pitch, as New York needed two plate appearances to get on the board. Jeter led off with a walk, and Granderson followed with a home run.

Orioles starter Jake Arrieta threw a breaking ball that was headed toward the lower outside corner of the zone. But it was still substantially in the zone and Granderson jumped on it, pulling the ball over the right field wall.

Granderson started a rally in the fifth with a one-out double. He moved to third on Mark Teixeira's single and scored on Alex Rodriguez's grounder to short.

But the Orioles rallied against the New York bullpen.

Joba Chamberlain took over for Garcia in the seventh and gave up a one-out single to Adam Jones before Reynolds blasted a homer to right, making it a 3-2 game.

Mariano Rivera entered to get the final out of the eighth and stayed in for the ninth.

He walked the leadoff batter, Jones, but seemed to be on his way out of the inning by fanning the next two. But a pinch-hit single by Jake Fox put two on for Roberts, who ripped a double down the right field line.

While Jones scored easily, a strong relay from Swisher and Cano beat pinch-runner Andino, who was tagged out to keep the Orioles from ending the game.

"That's one of the more underrated things about Robinson Cano, is how quick he's able to transfer the ball, his arm strength, considering how far he has to go out and typically go away from the play," Granderson said. "[He] makes a great throw and ends up getting a speedy runner at the plate to go ahead and keep us in the ballgame."

New York had a chance to go in front in the 10th, when it had runners on the corners and one out. Teixeira hit a fly ball to center, and Jones made a strong throw to Matt Wieters. He caught the ball high, and blocked the plate in order to make the tag, though the Orioles ended up on the losing end of some close plays.

"It's a game of inches," Wieters said. "And they got those inches today."

Game Notes

Jeter's four hits give him 2,945 for his career. He passed Frank Robinson (2,943) for 30th place all-time...Arrieta pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He also struck out a career-high nine.
