Marlins open set with visiting Dodgers
Apr 25, 2011 - 3:06 PM (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins are playing adequate baseball despite All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez's recent struggles at the plate. The Marlins hope Ramirez can break out of his slump when the Los Angeles Dodgers invade Sun Life Stadium tonight in the opener of a three-game series.Ramirez is 2-for-27 in his last eight games and has gone 0-for-4 over the previous three, including Sunday's 6-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set in north Miami. Mike Stanton picked up the slack with a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and Omar Infante contributed two hits and three runs batted in.
"This is big for us," Stanton said. "Everyone knows how good the Rockies are, and I think they're still kind of iffy about us. But this is big to show we can hang with these guys."
Marlins ace Josh Johnson hurled seven innings of one-run ball and struck out six batters for the no-decision. Michael Dunn picked up the win in relief and Leo Nunez struck out two in the ninth for his sixth save.
The Marlins have won eight of their last 10 games and are 5-1 on a nine-game homestand. They will send Ricky Nolasco to the bump tonight and he's 2-0 with a 3.00 earned run average in four starts. He is coming off seven shutout innings in Wednesday's 6-0 victory versus Pittsburgh and posted eight strikeouts.
Nolasco, a right-hander, has only faced the Dodgers twice in his career, going 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA.
Los Angeles will resume a six-game road trip Monday and took two of three games from the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field over the weekend. In Sunday's 7-3 triumph in the Windy City, Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a pair of hits and an RBI.
Ethier's hitting streak is the longest by a Dodgers player since Nomar Garciaparra's 22-gamer in 2006. Another hit would tie Joe Torre for the longest April hitting streak, as the former Dodgers skipper had a 22-game stretch as a member of the Cardinals in 1972.
Aaron Miles had three hits and an RBI, James Loney knocked in a pair of runs and Matt Kemp posted two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for Los Angeles, winners in six of the last eight games. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda benefited from a five-run first inning and lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out seven for the win.
"With five runs in the first inning, it was my responsibility to win this game," Kuroda told the team's site. "I felt that my tenacity pays off. As long as I'm pitching tough, with our offense we have now, we'll win many games."
Dodgers newcomer Jon Garland will make his third start this season and went the distance the last time out in a 6-1 victory versus Atlanta on Wednesday. Garland allowed the one run and four hits with four K's and two walks in just his second start of the season.
The right-hander has enjoyed success throughout his career against the Marlins as evidenced by his 5-1 mark and 2.33 ERA in seven starts.
Florida and LA are meeting for the first time since the Marlins won four of six matchups a season ago.
