Rockies try to make it two in a row over Cubs

Apr 26, 2011 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - Jorge De La Rosa signed a new contract this past offseason and so far he's earning every penny of that two-year, $21.5 million deal.

The Rockies will try to cash in again with De La Rosa on the hill tonight in the middle test of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. De La Rosa is 3-0 with a 3.00 earned run average in four starts this season and has prevailed in back-to-back starts.

De La Rosa was previously in action last Wednesday in a 10-2 drubbing of San Francisco at Coors Field, where the left-hander struck out six and allowed two runs in seven innings of work. Colorado's No. 2 starter in the rotation behind ace Ubaldo Jimenez, De La Rosa has given manager Jim Tracy at least five innings in every start and will try to stay unbeaten in his career against the Cubs.

He is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in six career matchups (2 starts) with Chicago.

Colorado hasn't been as consistent on the field and has alternated wins and losses over the last six games. It defeated the Cubs last night by a 5-3 score despite being outhit by an 11-4 margin. The Rockies took advantage of four Chicago errors and got RBI from Carlos Gonzalez and Jose Lopez. Gonzalez hasn't produced a hit in his previous 21 at-bats.

"When the door of opportunity knocks, we're capitalizing," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said postgame.

Esmil Rogers was credited the win and lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Huston Street came on in the ninth for his eighth save.

The Cubs have dropped two straight and four of five games, and wasted a 5- for-5 performance from Kosuke Fukudome. Darwin Barney cracked a two-run homer and Jeff Baker finished with three hits and a run scored for Chicago, which saw newcomer Matt Garza fall to 0-3 in his first season with the Cubs. Garza allowed five runs -- one earned -- in six frames with seven K's.

"If you're going to get beat, you'd at least like to not gift wrap the thing for the opposition," Cubs manager Mike Quade said.

James Russell is new to Chicago's rotation, but that may not last long since he's been struggling to keep runs off the board. Russell, who's filling in for injured hurler Andrew Cashner due to a strained right rotator cuff, last toed the rubber in a 5-4 loss versus San Diego on April 20.

Russell allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings in that one, falling to 1-2 with an 8.00 earned run average in six games (2 starts) this season. His first major league start was on April 12 at Houston, where he gave up five runs, four of which were earned, and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The left-hander has made two relief appearances against Colorado this season and is 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five career meetings -- all in relief -- with the Rockies. Right-handers are batting .469 against Russell, while lefty batters are hitting .111.

Colorado won two of the three meetings with Chicago from April 15-17 at Coors Field and is 10-4 in the previous 14 matchups between the two ballclubs.
