Jurrjens goes nine, pitches Braves past Padres
Apr 27, 2011 - 5:42 AMVideo
David Ross added two homers and four RBI for the Braves, who rebounded from a 5-3 loss in 13 innings Monday to pick up their fourth win in five games.
Jurrjens (2-0) threw 81 of his 114 pitches for strikes, giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks while fanning four.
Jones homered from the left side against Aaron Harang (4-1) to tie Mickey Mantle for second place all-time among switch hitters with 1,509 career RBI.
Harang took the loss, yielding all eight Atlanta runs in six innings. He gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out two.
Orlando Hudson hit an RBI triple and Eric Patterson also knocked in a run for the Padres, who fell to 2-7 in their last nine games.
Ross' first homer of the game -- and his first of the season -- gave the Braves a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Hudson's triple in the fourth scored Jorge Cantu, who singled, to get the Padres within two runs.
But Atlanta blew the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Jones sparked that rally as well, leading off with a single and moving to third on back-to-back walks to Dan Uggla and Freddie Freeman. Alex Gonzalez followed with a two-run single and Ross belted a three-run homer with one out to make it 8-1.
Armed with a huge lead, Jurrjens remained in the game after giving up a leadoff double to Brad Hawpe in the ninth. Hawpe scored after consecutive groundouts by Alberto Gonzalez and Patterson.
