Sanchez, Marlins go for sweep of Dodgers
Apr 27, 2011 - 2:38 PM (Sports Network) - Anibal Sanchez will try to pitch the Florida Marlins to a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers when the two ballclubs square off this afternoon from Sun Life Stadium. The Marlins haven't swept the Dodgers since taking all three matchups from Sept. 6-8 of the 1999 season in south Florida. They are counting on Sanchez to complete the sweep and he's 1-1 with a 3.55 earned run average in four starts this season. He won his last start in impression fashion last Friday in a 4-1 win over Colorado, as he went the distance for the first time in 2011 and for the fourth time in his career.
Sanchez, a right-hander, struck out nine Rockies and allowed one hit and three walks. He is winless in three starts against the Dodgers, going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA.
Florida has won three straight, 10 of 12 games and improved to 7-1 on a nine- game homestand with Tuesday's 4-2 victory over the Dodgers thanks to a decent start from Chris Volstad. Volstad hurled seven innings of two-run ball and struck out five batters. Randy Choate, Clay Hensley and Leo Nunez went the rest of the way to preserve the win, with Nunez nailing down his seventh save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
Gaby Sanchez homered and Mike Stanton ended with two hits and two RBI for the Marlins, who got a pair of hits and two runs scored from Hanley Ramirez.
Los Angeles has dropped two straight and three of four games, and didn't get much help from young left-hander Clayton Kershaw last night. Kershaw was tapped for four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings, but managed five K's.
"There were a couple of pitches I'd like to have back," Kershaw said.
James Loney finished 4-for-4 and Rod Barajas drove in a run for the Dodgers, who had won four of five before dropping the first two in this series. Andre Ethier extended his hit streak to 23 games, passing Nomar Garciaparra for the longest overall hitting streak as a Dodger and Joe Torre for baseball's longest such streak in the month of April.
Ethier is 0-for-6 lifetime against Sanchez and is batting .402 with two homers and 14 RBI over his hitting streak.
Chad Billingsley will handle pitching duties for Los Angeles today and he's 2-1 with a 4.13 earned run average in five starts. He is coming off last Friday's 12-2 drubbing of the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, as he held the hosts to a pair of runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The right-hander aims to stay unbeaten against the Marlins and is 4-0 with a solid 1.64 ERA in six games (5 starts).
Florida won four of six matchups with LA last season.
