Giants, Pirates go at it again at PNC Park

Apr 27, 2011 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of starters still seeking their initial wins of 2011 face off tonight, when the San Francisco Giants continue a three-game series with the host Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

The defending World Series champions ended a four-game skid with a 3-2 win in Tuesday's opener after Freddy Sanchez's groundout scored Darren Ford with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th.

Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey each had a sacrifice fly for San Francisco, which had been swept by Atlanta in a four-game home series over the weekend.

Starter Matt Cain got a no-decision after giving up two runs on four hits, fanning six and walking one.

Sergio Romo (1-0) earned the win with a perfect ninth and Brian Wilson locked the game down with a scoreless 10th to record his sixth save of the season.

Garrett Jones hit a solo homer and Lyle Overbay had an RBI single for the slumping Pirates, who have dropped five of seven.

Charlie Morton worked six-plus innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and struck out six, but did not figure in the decision.

Giants 21-year-old lefty Madison Bumgarner makes a fifth attempt at his first win of the season.

The 10th overall pick in the 2007 draft has lasted beyond five innings just once in four 2011 starts, as he pitched 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision at Arizona on April 17.

Bumgarner has taken losses while going three innings, five innings and 2 2/3 innings in the other three efforts, while the Giants have lost all four games in which he's pitched.

Overall, after allowing just 40 runs in 11 innings last season, Bumgarner has given up 16 runs in his first 17 1/3 innings this year.

He has never faced the Pirates.

For Pittsburgh, righty James McDonald also makes his fifth start while seeking win No. 1.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers draft pick has also managed to go beyond five innings only once while picking up two losses and two no-decisions.

The Pirates are 0-4 in games McDonald has pitched, including a 9-5 loss at Florida on April 21 in which he allowed six hits and eight runs in three innings.

McDonald, 26, is 0-1 in eight games against San Francisco -- one start -- and has given up 19 hits and six runs in 14 1/3 innings.

The Giants have won eight of the last 12 meetings with Pittsburgh spanning the last two seasons.
